Thats stupid. Buy a 69 which looks exactly the same for thirty bucks.

Appears to have some tiny frost breaks and areas not one hundred percent struck up. A stupid person will buy this coin.

Neat coin, but since I am not into the registry game, a 69DCAM would do well for me. But, congratulations to the buyer.

Could this be a Gift as the result of a very large submission?

DCAM PF 69 is fine with me.

I can think of better things to do with the thousands asked than to throw it away on this.

If it remains finest known, in 10 years that could be cheap

Will it break the price of the MS70 penny? I'm not into the registry game, give me a 1976 proofset and the leftover $14,500 please!
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

    From the auction description:

This spectacular coin belongs in the ultimate Registry set of Eisenhower dollars and / or Registry set of 1968-Present Proof coins.

Yeah, because that's about the only reason to spend $15,000 on a coin when a very nearly equivalent one can be found for under $100, most likely. That insert that says "70" instead of "69" is worth $14,900, apparently...

At the rate things are going, in 10 years there will be no more coinage.

What good are collectibles if no one collects them anymore?

Would you prefer to pay off all your debt and eat well

or to have a Dollar no one wants or you cannot even get out on?

I would rather have a coin that no one else in the world has. I've seen people drop $10,000 on the turn of a card that's dumb.

You've got to be kidding me. I purchased an entire set of PCGS PR69 Ikes, Silver and Clad, for approximately 1/50th of the price for this one coin.

    No.

Even if I can afford a $1,000 coin, I'm not going to buy it if I need an electron microscope to see that it's better than a $100 coin with a lower number on the label, assuming it really is a better coin at all.

The point is the same coin in a 69 has little or no chance of appreciating in value as much as a 70 of which there is only one known.

I can pretty much guarantee that if this was sent in to PCGS again, it would drop to a 69. The grader was probably just having a good day. I don't think one grader's opinion should be worth 15 grand+++

For a coin to be graded a 70, a minimum of 3 graders must look at then coin and agree on the grade.

That coin would rock in the "Kind of a rare coin" thread since most of those coins are condition rarities too.

"The point is the same coin in a 69 has little or no chance of appreciating in value as much as a 70 of which there is only one known."

That statement will hold true - until there are two known and believe me, that will probably happen.

I'd stick with a 69 too, probably not much upside, but far less downside.

    Post auction comment:

The 1976(s) Ty 1 Ike is a "3 weight" coin - the only 3 weight coin in the series and deservingly so IMHO. Compare the pop 2 1971(s) Silver Ike with a 1 weight, which fetched around $16,240 when it sold on Teletrade (I am also informed it traded hands once again after that auction). The 1976(s) Ty 1 is worth 3x as many points as that 1971(s) for example and from what I can see whomever controls the 1976(s) Ty 1 PR70DC has a fairly easy time controlling the #1 slot in Proof Ikes (possibly for a long time to come absent another 76(s) Ty 1 PR70DC getting slabbed). There is a benefit to having the #1 set in nearly all coin series and my comment addresses that point. For those who could care less about Registry, of course the weights are meaningless.

I believe this ($20,160) may be the highest price an Ike dollar has ever sold for (excluding the unique 1976 NO S pattern Ike dollar in my personal modern rarities collection).

PCGS Registry madness!!! Ya gotta love this crap, err, modern crap.

On a final note, I think the reverse stamp looks a bit light to be a 70. What a joke.image

The only difference I can see between a PR70 and a PR69 is a bad mood.

    Nice looking Ike though.
I like cheese, notes, and coins. In that order.

I would not pay PR70 prices for it but I still like the coin, now a 1978 PR70 DCAM Ike I might be tempted to place a bid but that's a registry thing.

No, everyone buys the best they can both afford if it's also something they want. Even if I was in the market for $15,000 coins, I'd be buying something else.

    Says $18,000 realized.
Must be nice to have that kind of disposable income to play in the registry that way.

Think about it this way. That's $18k that isn't competing for what you are collecting, oh wait, you wanted the world's finest? image

OK, so you buy this coin and it either develops a problem or you discover a flaw, you send it to PCGS.

Are they going to pay you what you paid for this coin and regrade it properly?
  • Options
Wouldn't this be a risky investment? because there are still millions of these coins in government proof sets in the publics hands that have not been checked yet. There are probably at least a thousand potential PF70s out there.

If people don't send them to PCGS, it doesn't matter the possibilities that are out there.
