Sounds good image Handing out some late date Kennedy halves would be exciting as well. Those aren't even available through normal circulation channels.

Forget the Kennedy Halves, I'm going to be giving a couple Barber Halves, seated halves, and a Bust Half during the week. There's nothing at all high grade (AG-G) and I believe I payed $5 for the Barbers $7 for the two Seated and $18 for the Bust.

I jumped the gun and went to talk to the kids in my wife's second grade class on Weds of last week. I gave them each an unc wheat penny, and they were thrilled. I let them handle a colonial coin, a large cent, and a morgan dollar, and I showed them my 7070 on the new photoprojector in the classroom, and we watched a video on coin production that my wife picked up at a coin show we went to. The kids (and I) had a great time, and I was kind of a celebrity by the end of the presentation. They must have asked me questions for an hour, and they even gave up recess to keep me in longer.

Plan to do a talk on coin collecting at the area public library on Thursday so that those who want to be a numismatist get informed and interested.

On the subject of National Coin Week - why a week? Wouldn't it be better if it was National Coin Month? Of course, every week is National Coin Week to me. image

I'm going to give a talk to 7th graders on wednesday, with some basics on coins/history, with a fair amount of show and tell. This being CA. one coin I'll definitely pass around is an 1849 gold eagle, yes I realize it has absolutely nothing to do with CA. but the kids won't know it (I probably will tell them though), and it will give them a sense of history in their hands. At the end of the talk I'll give them all a Buffalo nickel in ~F-12.

Although you might not have this coin, it could be interesting to tell them about the 1848 CAL quarter eagle. Some consider it the first US commemorative and it was circulated on the east coast to get people excited about the gold discovery in California, helping set off the 49er gold rush. Here's some info on the Mint website. Something that Californians may relate to image

Are they going to have the official Numismatists Day Parade in New York City?

I bought 25$ worth of Washington dollars and handed them out to 25 my son's 5th graders classmates. I explained to them it was National Numismatic Week, and that it meant it was the study and collecting of coins. They had huge smiles on their faces. Now that was a good investment.image
