I need advise on a nice 1960 Topps BB set

Hello,

I have just started posting tonight on this board. I am 55 years old and have just semi-retired. I have a 1960 Topps baseball set in high grade, and I would like some advise on how to keep it. I have had the top 15 cards in the set graded. They came out 1 - PSA 8, 2 - PSA 8 o/c, 11 - PSA 7, and 1 - PSA 6. The whole set is of this grade, except for about 6 common cards. Should I get more cards graded to increase the value of the set, or should I just keep them like they are? Any advise (good or bad) would be appreciated.

  • Unless you're looking to sell the set in the future, like the look of the cards in slabs or building a registry set, I don't really see any reason to slab them.

A high-grade 1960 set.... I'm jealous. I've been working on the this set for awhile when I in school. I just started back in the hobby and have resumed my quest of completing the set. I'm about 35 commons short of completing the set. However, I started a 1960 registry set and with upgrades and getting my cards graded, it's seems to have turned into a project again, but an enjoyable one.
Good Luck with whatever you decide.

    Kevin,

Thanks for your reply. I think you're right that I shouldn't grade any more of the cards. I got the super stars graded because I had never had any cards graded and wondered what kind of grades they would bring. They all looked like 8's to me, but, knowing very little about graded cards, they came back as mostly 7's.

Good luck on completing your registry set. Wasn't this a great set? I was 8 years old in 1960, and I remember buying the cards of that year.

If the idea is to maximize sales price, I'd advise finding out which would be considered "tough" (low population) PSA 8's, check for them and if 8 material grade them. Sell them separately (and replace for the set with NM).

Grade only sure 8's or HOF 7's.

Consider selling on these boards (to save ebay fees) too. $100 in lower expenses is just as good as $100 in higher sales prices.

How did the Yaz and McCovey RCs and the Mantle(s) grade?

    Mike,

Thanks for your reply. The Yaz graded a 6, the McCovey graded a 8 o/c, and the Mantle and Mantle A.S. both graded a 7.

I'm an old collector, but kind of a novice at this grading business. Thanks for your suggestions. I never thought to look at the population reports.

  • David, sound like you have a great set going. nice grades on the Mantle cards. if you like the set as it is i would'nt grade a bunch but if they are really nice there are some lo pop commons that go for a good amount if they grade out psa 8 or better starting with not a common but #1 Early Wynn, #19-21-26-27-33- and many more commons that will sell between $50- $100 or more in Psa 8's. the # 1 hardest card to get in an 8 is the 451 Curt Simmons which sells for $400+ whenever it goes on e bay. I've built 2 complete psa graded mostly 8 and better 1960 sets and the only card i never owned in an 8 is the 451 Simmons. good luck on whatever you do. Phil

    David:

Please send me an email about your 1962 Set; I've got a ton of doubles & triples available (from NM to EX). Need some NM cards for my set too. Maybe we can work out some trades to upgrade both of our sets?

    Phil, Mike, Kevin, and everyone,

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I'll look at the population report before deciding whether to get any others graded. I'll especially look at low nuimber commons such as #451. In addition to the 15 top stars I had graded, the many other stars such as Banks, Kaline, Killebrew, Ford, etc, all appear to be in similar PSA 7 condition. I understand that the cards will really need to be tip-top before I send them in. I'm not trying to sell the set; I'm just trying to get it as good as I can get it, because one day it will be sold or passed down to my son. Thanks again.

I'd suggest grading out the rest of the HOF'er that could meet a 7 grade, and then take the very very best commons you have and send a few of those in to see if they'll get 9s. I'd also look at the low pop report and if they look to be 8 or 9, send those in. You may be able to make a nice trade with someone to upgrade your stars for these low pop high grade commons.
    Enjoy your collection!

    Eric,

Thanks for your suggestions. I've had all the big stars graded, and they averaged a 7. I've checked the other HOFers and they appear to be the same. I'll check the low pop cards, too. I just don't know if it will increase the value of the set in proportion to the amount of money it will cost to have them graded. Also, I don't want to sell the set anytime soon, but I do want to get it in great shape for when I do want to sell it or when I pass it on to my son. Thanks again for your ideas
