Anyone ever heard of Toney Mullane? Crappy pictures added.

About 10 years ago I was in an antique store and picked up an old tobacco card of a Cincinnati player named Toney Mullane. The card is in horrible shape and probably rates about three or four points below poor. The year 1888 is printed on the right hand side right above the name of Goodwin & Co, NY. I would like to find out some information about the card and I would love to see a better copy of the card if anyone has one. Thanks for any information you can give me.

  • Are you sure that the card is that old?

Fred A (Alexandra) Toney was BORN in 1888 and is best known for being one of the two pitchers who both pitched a nine inning no hitter in the same game.
He and Hippo Vaughn battled each other for nine hitless innings until Vaughn allowed a couple of hits and a run while Toney continued his no hitter with a win in the tenth.
  • Is there a scan of the card?

Yeah, a scan would be needed. 1888 and Goodwin point towards it being an Old Judge, but no Toney in that set. The Toney who pitched the no-no didn't play for another 25 years....

Sorry about the crappy pics. These are the best I could do without a scanner. Like I said before, the card has seen much, much better days. I obviously didn't pay much for it but I have always been curious about who the player was and what the card was. Thank you guys for looking.

Anyone have an idea of what this card is? It's obviously not worth much but I am curious as to what it is. Thanks.

It is an N172 Old Judge, and it looks like the bottom portion may have been clipped/removed a few decades ago.

What years were they produced? And is that Fred Toney or someone else?

Chris, this one might be worth some further digging. There is no "Toney" in Old Judge, but there was a Phil Tomney. He is only known on N172 with Louisville, and although your pix are not the best, I concur that this seems to indicate Cincinnati as the team, although Tomney never played for any major league team other than Louisville. If this turns out to be an unlisted team, it could have some decent value despite its wretched condition. I'd take this over to the Forum 54 boards to see what the real experts have to say.

By the way, Fred Toney was the only major league player tried for draft dodging in World War I.

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your help in identifying this card. I just found out that it is Toney Mullane and is card #331-3c. So I guess my next question is what do you guys think she will grade? image Just kidding.

His name is Tony Mullane and he played in the 1880's his claim to fame is that he could throw right handed and left handed.

I think some here mixed up Toney Mullane with your other thread.

    Steve

edited to add: or is this the same thread?

    Good for you.

Same thread I was just trying to update it and I think that may have caused confusion. It is a really crappy card but it is one of my favorites.

    Chris

Edited to add that on these cards it looks like his name is spelled both ways. This particular card is the only one with the "Toney" spelling.
