Do you guys remember all those ads (pre-Ebay/Internet) that said "PRICES ARE SURE TO GO UP!!!&q

Okay, do you guys remember back in the days before the Internet/Ebay when the only way you could buy cards was either your local card store or if that didn't work, one of the publications of that day (Sports Collector's Digest, Baseball Cards Magazine) where dealers would advertise mail-in orders? Well, if any of you have any from about mid-80s-early 90s, take a look at them and what do you see? Well, one of the most common phrases is, "Don't Wait! Prices are SURE to go up!" Well, my question is, looking back at them now, have any of those 80s/90s sets actually gone up since then? image

Not even the all mighty 1984 Donruss, 1989 Upper Deck, or 1992 Bowman? image The way those sets were going back then, you'd think they'd be worth $500 each by now.

I remember getting my 1990 Leaf Set for Christmas. I was ECSTATIC! My mom paid around $200 for it. I think it was 90-100 per series at the time. I traded it away about 3 months later for some of the rattiest rc's you could find. But I did have a Johnny Bench, Dale Murphy, George Brett, Robin Yount and Mike Schmidt RC for them. OF course looking back, they were all about PSA 2 condition...but that didn't matter to me.

got me a NICE supply of those delightful little 1991 Leaf Studio!!! grabbed them up at around $55/box. PRESALE!!! THESE WILL BE ON FIRE!!! when i saw them for sale a month later (before MY boxes even arrived) they were at $1/pack. guess you could say I was 'on fire'......

for embarrassment's sake i'll not even mention the Topps Stadium Shlub from that year.....too late

I no longer have the magazines I mentioned, but can anyone show me how much the 1984 Donruss, 1989 Upper Deck, 1990 Leaf, 1991 Stadium Club, and 1992 Bowman started out when released, compared to now? I do have the Beckett 100th issue from 1993 so I can also contribute those prices upon request.

Of course, we should remember how different it was back then when you had no way of going online to buy/sell stuff, so stuff seemed even rarer back then I suppose.

When I moved last I saw I still had my Beckett's from 1989, 90, etc. Nothing like a 1989 Topps Walt Weiss or 89 UD Jerome Walton. He was the next big thing!!!
  • Or maybe an 87 Topps Wally Joyner, or 88 Donruss Gregg Jeffries, and who could ever forget Chris Sabo.
