Official Player Set Collectors Thread

Since there are a lot of Player Set collectors out there, I figured that we could update each other (and maybe help one another by keeping an eye out for stuff!) with the latest finds and completion percentages on our basic and master sets.

Right now I am working on the Luis Tiant (yet to be added), Camilo Pascual (yet to be added), Magic Johnson, Tony Perez, Tony Oliva, Bert Campaneris (yet to be added), Frank Robinson, Tommy Lasorda (yet to be added), Raphael Palmeiro & Don Drysdale (100%, but looking to upgrade) basic player sets.

What do all of the rest of you have going?

Mike Schmidt is my main priority.

I would pay an arm and a half for a 1981 OPC Schmidt in NM/MT condition.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I see the Cuban and LA connection. However, why do you collect Frank Robinson? When you get around to it, maybe you could post your favorite card of each player.

I have three player sets that I am working on at this time, as follows:

    (1) Nap Lajoie: I collect his cards because he was French Canadian. In addition, I consider him one of the top 5 second baseman. However, he does not seem to get his proper respect.

    (2) Reggie Jackson: One of my favorite players growing up.

    (3) Greg Luzinski: Another one of my favorite players.

The only set that is currently on the registry is Reggie Jackson. I may get around to adding the others. I will post scans of my favorite card that I have of each of them.

Cool idea Arny! I am a little over 70% complete on my Gaylord Perry set. I still have yet to find the 1982 Donruss or Fleer in PSA 9 or 10 and the 1983 Donruss or Fleer in PSA 9 or 10. Those will be the thorn in my side. The other 3 I need, I see on ebay alot, so I am not concerned about those. If anyone finds the Donruss or Fleer issues I need, PLMK. Thanks!!
  • My main collecting priority is George Brett. Right now, I am at 95% on the Master Set of 415 cards (there are another 150-200 cards that have yet to be added to the registry) and 98% on the Basic Set of 86.

I'm still looking for a decent '75 PSA 9, the impossible '76 9, and, like mikeschmidt, a decent '81 OPC. I had a sureshot 8 that was rejected 4 times by PSA as not meeting minimum sizing requirements. I finally sold it. I have one at PSA now that, assuming it is the right size, might 8 IF PSA is lenient on top-bottom centering. But, I would take a 7 on it at this point.

I am always looking to upgrade 8s and most 9s.

    Thanks

    Randy

.... with the help of a recent submission, my Chris Sabo set registries are looking more and more complete! The (listed) Basic set is 100% complete, and the Master set is missing just one card. In reality, the list on PSA's site is missing MULT. cards... some of which I have (graded) and others I'm still seeking (graded.) I have about 20 additional cards in the 'requested' pile waiting for PSA to add to the list.

    Basic Set
    &
    Master Set

    Enjoy!

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

I collect Magic and Bird. Also Muhammad Ali, though that one has gotten very large and scattered of late. I have a few others started, like Payton, Maravich, Staubach, Kellen Winslow Sr., but my main focus has been on Magic and Ali.

And I love the player sets because they take so much work, as opposed to just unlimited funds (though that certainly would help too).
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
  • I collect Walter Payton and Joe Montana player sets. I just got my Montana collection to all 9's. The 94 card took a little time to find. I still need the 85 card to get my Payton set to all 9's. I have some extra's if anyone want to trade.
  • I collect Jack Dempsey and Mike Greenwell. I have to agree with Greg, seems the player sets require more creativity than collecting a straight set, which I enjoy. I'm going up against some heavy hitters in the Dempsey set and I've managed to acquire some issues that even they don't have through diligence and out-of-the-box thinking. Still a long way to go, though. It sure is fun.

I think what I enjoy the most is that with player sets you venture into many territories, spanning many different sets and types of issues. It adds variety to the collection that spices things up.

I have to admit, ever since joining the forum here, I am quite lost.
All this basic set/master set /sets of single players and so on .

I have been collecting cards since 1974, there or about. After all these years you would think I had at least basic knowledge on what I have been collecting .

I always thought , you get the checklist , you get all the cards on the list you have the whole set ?

    I don't understand the Basic/Master /Single player set stuff though .

From a single player standpoint , I love collecting John Elway, Dan Marino, Reggie Jackson, Barry Sanders And Terrell Davis .

Those guys are all heroes of mine .

I would appreciate if someone could just give me a basic explanation of the difference between basic/master and single player sets .

This is a kinda tough question to ask in a forum such as this , with the caliber of collectors that are here but at the risk of sounding stupid/ignorant I'm asking anyway .

    Thank you .

    Anthony .

Can anyone else explain to me what in the world an "optional" card is in a Master Set. Without knowing anything about the concept, I think it is completely stupid. Now I am hoping to hear that there is a legitimate reason for the designation/non-designation of it all...

    Arny,
There is now an "optional" card added at the end of the Magic Johnson set, which is where I noticed it...

  • Right now, I am primarily working on the Wade Boggs and Bo Jackson master and basic sets with the Wade Boggs sets being my priority. I have completed the Jim Palmer basic set; but, I want to upgrade many of the cards. An Alexander Ovechkin set is also in the works; however, I have not requested it yet. Right now, I have my set in the Collector's Showcase. Eventually, I will start a Jim Palmer master set and some other of my favorite players (Dave Parker, Boog Powell, Warren Moon to name a couple).

Here is a link to a webpage including my sets: Link.

    Nice thread!

    I'm working on:

Julius Erving Basic (33% complete, and all but the 1972 Topps rookie are waiting to sub - can't wait to see how far up the list I jump when that sub hits)

    Larry Bird Basic

I find player sets are much less intimidating than company sets. And the thought of the money I'd need to spend to complete virtually any company set worth collecting kind of scares me off.

Future player sets I'm going to start working on shortly are Bo Jackson and a yet to be determined Red Sox player - I liked the idea someone had of an "only-Red Sox" Roger Clemens set, so maybe that's the choice....
  • I am working on the Graig Nettles master set and having a lot of fun with it.

Looking for additions or upgrades to my Graig Nettles master player set on the registry.
  • Hi,

Player sets were my initial interest but I've branched out a little in the last couple years

    Baseball:

    Tony Gwynn (#2/#2)
    Kirby Puckett (#3/#3)
    George Brett (#3/#2)
    Dale Murphy (#5/#5)
... thinking of starting Al Kaline at some point.

    Hockey:

    Patrick Roy (#1/#1)
    Joe Sakic (not yet entered)

    Football:

    Dan Fouts (#2/#2)
    Charlie Joiner (#2/#1)
    Kellen Winslow (#2/#1)
    Peyton Manning (#1/#1)
Archie Manning Basic (can't forget Peyton's dad)
    Steve Young (#1/#1)
Kurt Warner (#1/#1) (may be sold soon)
    Junior Seau (rookies only)
    Lance Alworth (#2/#4)
    John Hadl (#3/#3)
    Ron Mix (#4/#3)
    Johnny Unitas (just starting)

I'm working on the Football HOF RC and key card sets which has taken a lot $$$ that I would otherwise spend on player sets. However, I still keep an eye out for stuff I need.

    Mr Bill Novick,

I appreciate your patience in waiting for two full days for me to answer an e-mail before placing this sort of post in public. Your cards have been mailed and you should receive them mid-next week if everything goes well. Sorry about the lack of communication for both days, but this is my birthday weekend and I've had several things that have been going on which have limited me to getting communications out.

    Thanks again,

  • I have been collecting graded Don Mattingly cards for a long time. I think I started about 7 years ago, long befor the start of the Registry. I am also collecting Dock Ellis cards. I would like to start more player sets, but I can't even keep up with the growth of the Mattingly master set right now.

From PSA's website "Items which may be scarce or new to PSA grading may be added as optional to the set until a population of 3 is reached."
I think this is a much better way to intergrate cards into the master sets. I'm sure a lot of people didn't like seeing their completion knocked way down after some gets a whole bunch of new cards graded. It also prevents 1/1 cards from being added the the sets, which would just be unfair. PCGS does something similar with the coin registries. Coins of the current year are not required until the beging of the next year. For example, 2007 coins are not required until January 2008. This gives all the registants some time to get the new coins with out having to worry about their completion percentage dropping just because they they aren't the first to have the new years coins. I think there is a requirement of there to be 5 coins graded for any variety before it will be added to the PCGS registry. Most of the cards listed in the player registries as optional will become required once a few more example are graded and more graded examples become available to collectors.

All cards from the players playing days can be part of the master sets. Originally the basic sets were just the base set cards of any regular issue set (widely distributed, regular cards, issued in packs). PSA has recently changed this to any card that is not an insert. The new defination of the basic set makes basic sets for players playing before the 1990's pointless because the whole point of the basic sets was to exclude oddball issues. Now those oddball cards are being added to basic sets making them nearly identical to the master sets. I think 99% of player collectors agree with the original defination of basic sets, but PSA insists on allowing stickers, discs, hand cut cards, etc to be added to basic sets.

A truly nice example of a card I have always really liked.

I have a Phil Niekro basic set going, unofficial ones for Smoltz and Glavine (I see Tommy G's name in the PSA queue, so...someday I can make it legal image), Charley Taylor, Art Monk, Bobby Mitchell, et. al.

In the next little while I will be registering some more ones (Theismann for sure, and probably Riggins, Jurgensen and Dale Murphy.) I want to get at least a few cards before I actually create the set.

Doing team-oriented stuff like this, like Bri does with all of his Big Apple teams, is probably what I'm going to concentrate on this spring and summer.

There are some great player sets here....I love those local sports minor star sets! Once I finish my player sets, I'm probably going to go after my L.A. Dodgers (already have the '81 Topps set being put together) from the '70s to the mid '80s. I might just go after the player sets of the Dodger starters like Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell, Ron Cey, Dusty Baker, Ken Landreaux, Pedro Guerrero & Mike Scioscia. I'll probably throw in my rotation of Fernando Valenzuela, Jerry Reuss, Burt Hooten, Don Sutton & Bob Welch player sets too image

I want to start a few of the sets your in as well but I am tring to stay focused image the HOF RC set is very attractive other than the money factor. i collect the Larry Bird basic and master. i'm thinking about starting cowens and havlicek sets. i'm also thinking about submitting players sets for D. johnson, k. mchale and r. parrish. i like the players sets for basketball since i don't have to collect the whole set. i like baseball sets and players sets from the other major sports. still haven't found a football players set i want to build, i'm a jets fan and besides the namath pickings are slim.

I have become more interested in HOF player sets lately. This last month I have been working on basic sets of Marcus Allen, Steve Young, Tony Dorsett and Ozzie Newsome. I tend to purchase a couple dozen PSA 10's a week, usually all HOF's, but with little focus so I am not getting anywhere with most of the players.
