Anyone have any luck pulling 9's or 10's from rack packs?

Thinking of wasting a couple of hundred at BBCE on some mid-80's rack packs - if for no other reason than I have never "busted" racks.

Thoughts appreciated

For gem mint cards, racks are your best option, better than wax, cello or vending. Dan (softparade) pulled a bunch of Gem Mint 10s from a 78 rack case purchased from bbce a while back.

  • My most recent rack bust from Steve was for 1979 Topps. I bought a 6 box rack case from Steve last year. I opened an equivalent of 5 boxes. The 6th "box" consists of racks with key HOF on the front. All of the cards had nice corners and edges. The centering was very good considering the set. I set aside 600 cards that I though had a chance at a 10. I sent in a test of 100 random cards from the group. I received 64 10s and 36 9s. I am sending the remaining 500 cards to PSA.

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

    From one rack pack? Sweet!

Racks are definately the best way to go, If you can get a three box rack case.

One rack bought on Ebay. 10's were all commons (one Yankee commoner), 9s included a Rose and Jackson RB.

  • I was thinking about doing the same thing. Here's my question, a couple of the years I was looking at they didn't have any rack packs, so what's the next best cello, then wax? Where do the vending boxes fall, do you get a lot of bad corners with them? Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Racks are good, but make sure you're getting them case-fresh. Once the racks are handled and folded over, corners start to get a little worn. Buying loose racks off ebay generally isn't a good way to go.

I'd say rack is best, followed by wax, cello and vending last.

There is less movement of the cards in the mid-70s racks (1974-1976) than in later years, so if you're buying single racks, those years are good to go for, but more expensive, of course. Bottom line is to know your source--there are many less than reputable sellers out there, some of whom reseal racks, too, though they are tougher to tamper with than wax or vending, in general.

Reaper- wax refers to 10-15 cards wrapped in a wax paper wrapper. Depending on the wrapper the top and bottom card may be visable. One card may have gum damage and one card may have wax damage. Cello is usually 25 or more cards wrapped in a cello wrapper with top and bottom cards visible. These may have 2 cards with gum damage also. Rack packs are generally over 30 cards wrapped in cello but you can see the top 3 cards and the bottom 3 cards. These packs generally do not contain gum but may be sequenced. Topps produced cards in a 132 card sheet, and since these were mass produced TOYS sometimes these can be found in a pattern- i.e. Bonds on top 3rd card down-Mattingly ect- these are best bought by the rack case. Hope this helps. You're friend, Mike
