Any advice for a newby that wants to collect autographs/sign memorabilia?

A friend of mine is considering taking the plunge. Are there any good books he should get before he gets started? He seems to be leaning toward football and some baseball material---signed jerseys and balls. Any advice on books or general advice is very much appreciated.

    Does your friend happen to have a lot of money?

    If he is looking at obtaining the items himself (i.e. he actually sees it signed in person), it all depends on the player/team etc. Shows with signings are a good way, as is camping out outside of a training facility/stadium etc.

    If he is looking at purchasing signed items, stay away from Ebay unless it is authenticated
    Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

    Thanks Onlyanumber, I belive he'd be buying pre-signed items. I told him about e-bay and how it can be a dumping ground.

    I was hoping there were some comprehensive books/guides that he could read and be reasonably well 'armed'
