I have a early to mid 80's Graig Nettles game used jersey (EDIT: Pics added)

Where would I go about finding a value for said item?

EDIT: PICS ADDED AT BOTTOM OF PAGE.

  • What team is it? Yankees? Padres? Braves? Expos? Home or away?
  • Have you tried contacting Dave Bushing?
  • wow, that would be a dream piece of memorabilia!

just curious if there is a story behind how you came across it?
Looking for additions or upgrades to my Graig Nettles master player set on the registry.
  • Depending on team, condition, game use, provenance etc, I'd put a round number of $500 on it.

mom's boss gave it to me about 15 years ago. Free of charge. He said they tried to get a Gwynn jersey, but they settled for the Nettles jersey.

I was pretty happy to say the least

  • Is it home or away? What is the year on the tag in the jersey? Does it have the RAK patch on the sleeve if it is from 84?

edited to say I didnt read the above since its a home jersey

The Padres didn't go to pinstripes until 1985, so it's from 1985-86.

    Steve

Edited to remove 1987 from possible years, since Nettles didn't play for the Padres after 1986.
  • An 85 Nettles home jersey went for 2,000.00 (which I think is quite high) on ebay by B&E Collectibles. (Item number 320097396807)

That should serve as a guide for you.

Check the tagging to see if they match...

Nettles is one of those players that has a cult-like following. His uniforms and bats sell for way above what other similar players of the era bring. The jersey, if authentic is definitely a $1000+ item.

Here's a little bit about Dave Bushing from Mears, they do a lot of authentication and they're known as experts on markings, tagging etc. Mears online. They can probably tell you a lot more about your jersey.

  • Hey pictures!!! I had actually taken a few pics of a couple of my GWs in an effort to get you to show us your goods, but you didnt even need the encouragement now did you image Dont worry though, I wont highjack your thread ~ for a few days at least image (I'm a GameUsed nut and can never get enough of sharing and viewing pics of um)

BTW, great looking jersey! Any added patches are usually harder to find so you have a great one!

Hey thanks for the link there, I too will probably find it handy!

Question, do you happen to know if they will have listings of minor league team rosters with players numbers and details? I have a bunch (and I'm talking probably about 15-20) from minor league teams that I cant identify the players because of lack of that info. Or if anyone happens to know of websites with that info, that would also be helpful.

    Huh?

If you are too young to have ever saw Nettles play, then I'll give you the benefit of the doubt but here are a couple of reasons Nettles might have a following:

    1) He was on the great late 1970s/1980s Yankees teams.

    2) Probably one of if not THE BEST fielding 3rd baseman in the history of the game. I mean he was SPECTACULAR. His reputation was solidified in Game 3 of the 1978 World Series when he made not just one but several plays that are still unbelievable to see.

    3) Clutch hitter despite his weakish lifetime BA. Tailored his swing to the short RF fence at Yankee stadium and set what was then the season HR record for 3B.

From a collecting standpoint, my few interactions with him while chasing autographs in the 1970s were good. He was a willing signer and seemed to always have a smile on his face. He was also rumored to be a world class practical joker.

    4) One of only a handful of captains for one of if not the most storied franchise in sports

    5) 47th on the all time HR list, ranking him as one of the top 3rd baseman in terms of HR's all time

    6) I believe he was the last Yankee to lead the American League in Home Runs

And just to add an asteric to the above, his average is weak when put up against the steroid era and small park era but for that time during the 70's from my memory it was pretty typical for a HR hitter to have an average in that range.

  • Does it have a Wilson size 44 tag on the outside of the front left tail along with a number/year strip tag? Definately looks like tobacco spotting down the front to show good usage. What is that tagging inside the collar?

    It's a 42 size. It doesn't have a year. I'll post pics when I get home.

    Nothing? image

I'm not saying it isnt a actual game used, but its uncommon to see one without some kind of identifying tag. Here are a couple examples:

    image

The 1982 jersey has the little flap tag sown in stating "set 1, 1982" ~ this is the type of tags I have seen on most jerseys until about 1998ish
The 2000 jersey has the more current sown on identification marker ~ which in this case states "2000"
Or in the case of the pants you can see a sewn in tag similar to the newer jersey which details the specifics on them ~ this one is "player 12, size 35 X 35, year 1999" - Robby Alomars pants from 1999
Here is another pic of one of those tags, this time with some of the other common additional tags (sorry for the card hold, the tags kept trying to curl image )

    image

Even pre-season jerseys will almost always have some kind of tag like that though; this one from 1990 was sewn into the inside of the tail along with the Rawlings patch you generally see on the outside of the jersey as you can see:
    image

The only jerseys which I have seen that dont have these year tags are from the minor leagues (as they are often reused multiple years because the don’t have players names most of the time ~ esp in years past), but even they make sure they keep all the original tags in it. This is a 2002 Brain Tallet Buffalo Bisons jersey where he trimmed the bottom off the jersey himself but they still put the tag which would have been lost back inside the front flap.
    image

From my experience the year flaps seem to be present dating back to the 70s, prior to that the information could have been either sewn or written into the uniforms to identify them.

I'll check the jersey when I get home for tags that I didn't see.

  • I don't think Sand Knit made Padres jerseys in 1985 or 1986.

Yupper. SandKnit only made 1976 home jerseys for the Padres.

Unless my eyes are going bad, it looks like some sort of tagging in the collar in the first picture.
