What the Heck?

I just stumbled across this while looking for a particular date and mint 5 mark and am a little disturbed by this auction listing... Has anyone ever dealt with this seller/auction house before? The following is what really bothers me!

1

<< <i>Bidders not known to us are required to deposit 25% of their total bids in advance. >>

2

<< <i>A 15% buyers charge will be added to the hammer price of each lot purchased; eBay bidders pay 20%. >>

3

<< <i>Credit cards will not be accepted for auction purchases. A storage fee of $10 per day will apply if lots are not picked up or shipped within 30 days of the conclusion of the auction. >>

Maybe they are legit and I have just missed them before... Am I am being over cautious? Here is the link to the listing, maybe I am reacting this way since no pics are available and the sellers feedback is all of 51... Smythe

Any thoughts or comments?

  • Legitimate....

I'll leave it to another to elaborate and explain the requirements... (I'm sure most of the readers will know to whom I refer...)

The length of those terms and conditions give me a headache.

It also looks like they collect sales tax even on out-of-state sales, unless I'm reading incorrectly. What if you're purchasing from a state that does not apply sales tax to coins?

R M Smythe is a well known, very legit NYC auction house, especially for US currency, stocks and bonds. One of the "big three" for US currency: CAA/Heritage, Lyn Knight and RMS. I have bid in their auctions several times for better US currency and had no problem.

The terms you mention are not unusual for currency at least: Heritage also has a 15/20% rate schedule for direct and ebay bidders. The "storge" fee is an alternative, I think, for the interest other house charge for late/non-payers. I've seen a few house have acceptable references or 25% deposit. I don't recall, but don't think the other houses I deal with accept credit cards (which would incur a charge from the credit card companies that checks, wires, etc do not involve)

You might want to go directly to their site and see if the same item is available there to get the lower buyer's fee and to submit references to get an account number. Here's their link: smythe

    Good luck!

PS, I don't recall getting charged sales tax but they do charge shipping as do the other houses.
