Google checkout

Has anyone else used this? Is this the end of the monopoly of paypal?

I bought something today and the individual used a google checkout. I had never heard of this before. The system was just as easy to use as Paypal. So my questions are:

Does this mean paypal is finally going to have some real competition?

Is this going to catch on as much as google's other services?

Is paypal going to have to lower their fees because of this?

Oh, the possibilties are infinite!!!

Anyone else have any opinions on this

eBay does not accept Google checkout as a method of payment.

Sellers using GCO pay ZERO fees for ALL of 2007.

EBAY sellers who send out their own invoices - not through
the EBAY system - are offering GCO as an optional form of
payment. Sellers using one of the "auction management"
systems are also including GCO as an option.

It cannot be mentioned in the EBAY listing.

There was an article in the New York Times on it a while back---the bottom line, if I remember correctly, is that it is trying to establish itself whatever the cost (thus the no fees) in order to become competative further on down the line.

  • I wonder how long Ebay will be allowed to do that. I would think google will have to force their way into ebay with some form of lawsuit.
For us buyers, ebay is using its monopoly powers by suggesting that google is unsafe
    with this crap
Payment Services not permitted on eBay:
"Safety and convenience are at the core of eBay’s policies toward payments. This policy is designed to promote safe online shopping, and to encourage online payment methods that are safe, easy to use, reliable, and offer high levels of protection for users. The policy also attempts to preserve some flexibility for users that still prefer offline payment methods."

  • If Google Check Out somehow nudges itself into PayPal's competition and hurts eBay, they will just raise fees on its auction merchandise. If Google would start an auction site, THEN and only then would eBay get nervous.

I bet a google auction site is on the horizon, as long as this CO system works out. I think that people would really use it. Ebay really has become a monopoly and if anyone has the power to take them down it is Google.
