The 1997 Ultra Dex Coakley PSA 10's. Nice job.

    Are you selling or keeping?

    Thanks.
  • One Coakley is for me and the other is on hold for someone. The Herb Scott and Roy Williams are also not available, but everything else is.

Holy Crap, great grades. You have a great eye!
  • I might be an idiot, but what's the point of having over 10 cards, all with the same grades, of the same player in the same year? Selling??? is my guess.

that is sick. I have had my invoices down there for 2 months and you get yours done in 5 business days. Not too mention all PSA 10's. I hope I get your grader.
    congrat on a great sub!

Great grades. Too bad those weren't graded about 7 years ago. Those fleer psa 10 Griffey's fetched about $700 each.
  • I forgot to mention that my order was a 5 day/$13 special. I also sent 10 reviews in with it that have still not popped after being logged in on the 2nd of April. If anyone is interested, I will post the results of the reviews when they come in. The cards are detailed below with their current grades:

    1975 Rocky Bleier PSA 9
1993 SP Drew Bledsoe PSA 9
    1972 Rayfield Wright PSA 9
    1973 Franco Harris PSA 8
    1965 Mel Renfro PSA 8
    1988 Roger Ruzek PSA 9
    1984 Jim Kelly PSA 9
    1976 Walter Payton PSA 9
    1975 Lynn Swann PSA 9
    1984 Mark Duper PSA 9

I have been running around 30% of my reviews upgrading and a few of these cards are flawless so I am expecting at least 3 bumps. I will post here when it happens.

Reviews can be sent in under any service level. Cost is the same as having raw cards graded. If one gets a bump, they pop it and place it in a new holder but it keeps the same cert #.

    Rich,

It would take an Act of Congress to get a PSA 9 Renfro RC (if it gets bumped) from Scott...lol

I tried bumping mine twice with no luck...Its got one weak corner, but actually is only weak because of the rough cut, its not dinged..May be worth another try...

WOAH!! Man, that makes me regret selling the cards I pulled from my 1989 Fleer set case. Several years ago I bought a case and pulled all of the top cards with the intention to submit them. I ran into money trouble and had to sell them raw. Man, that's sweet. Was that a March Special sub?
  • Jason's right on that act of Congress. My Renfro is on it's 3rd review and it looks identical to Jason's and even has the same single rough corner issue. I will probably crack it on the next go around if it does not upgrade this time. The Rayfield Wright I have is flawless. I am expecting that one to bump as well as the Bledsoe and Duper cards. If anyone knows of a Renfro 9 for sale, let me know. Check my #1 Cowboys Rookies Set below.

    I am looking for a 62 Don Perkins 9, 65 Renfro 9, 63 Bob Lilly 9, 66 Bob Hayes 9, 71 Duane Thomas 9, 72 John Niland 10, 74 Billy Joe DuPree 10, 76 Harvey Martin 10, 76 Randy White 10, 77 Butch Johnson 10, 80 Herbert Scott 10, and of course the mother of them all, 78 Tony Dorsett 10.My Cowboys Set

Just curious, how can PSA accurately regrade a card when it is in a holder? I have submitted cards before that had minor imperfections, but once it was slabbed, the imperfection did not show up. I guess maybe they review it in the holder. If it looks like a candidate for resubmission, then they crack it out and review it closer. If it still looks good, it gets a 10. If the imperfection now shows up, it gets put back into a 9 holder.

  • Don,

Maybe Joe O. is reading this and can tell us. My guess is that they use a highly lighted magnification process that would show up flaws even under the plastic.

All I know is that anytime I send a card in with no flaws, it always has been upgraded. They have to find some flaw to point out with their arrow stickers that they leave on the case.

Jason might elaborate as he is more of an experienced pro at reviews than I.

I can tell you that they do NOT pop the card unless it is getting upgraded. Anytime a card doesn't bump, it comes back in the exact same holder it was sent in.

While I don't know the exact grading process for reviews, here is what I think based on numerous submissions. The reviews are not done in the "grading room" by the regular graders doing raw submissions. I believe reviews go to one or two specific reviewers, possible the head graders? I believe this because, (and this is one of the things I like the most about reviews) when you get your reviewed cards back, and they don't get bumped... PSA places small stickers, as Scott pointed out, on the case pointing to a flaw or giving an explanation as to why the card did not get upgraded. Corners, centering, print defect, etc..They specify and point out what the exact flaw or flaws are. And the writing on these stickers can't come from more than 2 different guys based on what I've got back on the approx. 10-15 orders I have sent in for reviews.

The other thing is that many people believe that PSA will never upgrade a card that they know PSA previously graded lower. Meaning if I send a PSA 9 card in for a review, PSA would never change that to a PSA 10 because that would be an admission that they got the first grade wrong. From my experience, if the card truly DESERVES to get bumped, PSA will upgrade it. I think they have good intentions and want the cards in their holders graded correctly. They know that not every grader gets every card 100% correct. I mean it's an opinion based on their published standards right?

The catch phrase I've heard that really fits the process is" All cards will eventually end up in their highest possible holder". In someways, this is the downside, as its not like collectors are sending in PSA 8's that could be 7's and asking for a downgrade...lol...The purpose of a review is to upgrade your cards...So the high end PSA 8's turn into PSA 9's, but the low end 8's stay in their 8 holders...

So my advice it that if you have high dollar cards that you'd rather not pop and re-submit raw..Reviews can be successful if you have a good eye for what you are looking for. It takes practice and you need to be able to look at comparable grades for cards of that same year. I always figure if I send in 20 and get one bump, it was a successful submission.

    Hope this provides some insight,
    Jason

  • Jason,

Adding to your commentary. In the past I have had anywhere from 10-30% in bumps per review. Keeping that in mind, even one bump will usually pay several times over for an order's fee. My finest example so far was a psa 9 1973 Jack Youngblood on my last order that bumped to a 10. I sold that card for $1500. I had about 12 reviews in that order and paid around $175 total for the reviews. In that same order, I had 2 other cards that bumped that wound up selling for an extra $300+ over their previous prices. Do the math. If you have a good eye, you can really profit.

I have a few cards that I felt were undergraded but never bothered to crack and resubmit. I've cracked some GAI holders and had very good luck with those but never done the review process. Might have to dig through my stuff again and see what I can come up with. image There's always that $13 5 day special I could use. image

    Jason,
That's one awesome looking Renfro. I'm a set builder and it's the last 'big' card I need for my '65 set. I'll eventually win one on ebay in the next year or so. I'm not sure why that card seems to be the hardest RC to find in high grade from that set, but it sure seems that way to me.

Excellent post on the review process too. That's pretty much sums it up along with Scott's follow up post.

I've only tried reviews a few times. I once was fortunate to have a '66 Willie Mays bumped from 8 to 9. That made my National. It was truly a spectacular card. When it was originally slabbed five years prior to this, maybe the grader was having a bad day.

    Scott,
I didn't realize your Renfro RC is for your set. I hope you get a lot of bumps on your Cowboys cards. You have one great set there. Wow!

    Regards,
    Rich

This is your best option no doubt...But for those of us (like me) who typically don't want to risk cracking a $500+ card because it COULD come back lower graded, the review is a nice option. And like I said, you also get an actual REASON as to why the card won't bump...

I've had a couple of cases in the past where I cracked a high dollar card and it came back at a worse grade..The most recent was a Unitas PSA 7 that I cracked..I submitted it twice and both times came back as "altered"..Sold it on ebay and told the story of the card (was a 7, came back altered, etc.)...

Well the guy who bought it raw from me re-submitted and got the PSA 8!!lol..But that's the risk you take when cracking..With reviews there is no risk...If it doesn't bump, nothing lost but your grading fee...

  • Thanks Rich.

I have had most of the newer cards graded myself. By the way, I also had a problem with cracking and resubmitting. My worst experience was cracking a SP Zach Thomas rookie that was a 9. I thought it was a 10 and sent it in raw. It came back an 8. I then recracked and sent it in again. It came back a 6! I am resending it raw again and I bet it comes back either a 10 or a 5, LOL.

Most of the time PSA is very consistent, but every once in a while, they get a little zany.

Good luck on those raw 84 Stephensons Jason.

    DOH!

    That is pretty crazy.

I can't believe a 9 came back a 6 on the second try, that is insane. Let's hope you at least get it back in its original 9 holder this time around.

  • So far, I have the 1975 Bleier rookie upgrading to a PSA 10. I will post any other upgrades as they come in. On a side note, I finally picked up a PSA 10 1976 Randy White. I sold mine a few months ago and I have been eager to replace it.

  • envoy98envoy98 Posts: 4,000 ✭✭
    Wow, that's awesome! Congrats.

Curious though, how did you hear about the Bleier already? Or am I missing somethin?
  • Envoy,

I have been checking the individual certs on their website. It is weird that the order number is still not showing complete. I hope they are not finished reviewing my order because I really could not find anything wrong with the Bledsoe, Duper, and Rayfield Wright. All the other cards could go either way.

Anyone interested in the 75 PSA 10 Bleier can have it for $375 delivered. I think the pop is 4 or 5.

Hmm. I didn't realize they would update them individually like that. I figured they would do them all at once after the order was done with sealing for the upgrades. Cool though, nice to see it got a bump. Let's hope a couple of the others get a bump now.
  • JasP24JasP24 Posts: 4,645 ✭✭✭
    Scott,

    I've got bad news...lol

If one has been updated, they are all done..They don't update the certs until the end...I had the same issue with my last order of reviews and that is what I was told by PSA..

I though my Rayfield Wright would bump as well:

So do I...It went directly back into my pile of cards waiting to go to PSA for grading...lol

Thought about popping it, since I don't see any way that card doesn't come back at least a 9. We'll see...

  • My Wright card has the same issue with his left eye as yours. I believe that is on most of the cards so it should not be a reason to downgrade. Other than that, there was nothing on it.
