Alpha PSA 10 Black Lotus - signed!

Have you guys seen this on eBay?

PSA 10 Alpha Black Lotus

I am sure there is more than one person excited about this one. Although some people may not like the signature, it's fairly unique to have a PSA 10 signed like this.

Any estimates as to how much it will go for?

Comments

  • Well...I can guarantee you one thing...

It will AT LEAST go for over 10,000.00

ill make sure of that image

  • It's neat that it is signed, makes it really unique. Even more unique than it already is!

I wonder how the seller got it? Anyone have the history on this? Why would anyone get such a nice card signed?
  • Hey Guys,

This card has me confused. To my knowledge, the only Gem 10 signed Alpha Lotus I know of is Mr Chang's, and this one isn't it. Perhaps it's a newly graded one, in which case the advertising is false. Feel free to check for yourself...

    This one PSA cert. #60099561
    Dan Chang's cert. #06378646

  • Thanks for posting Dan's cert number Jared, I was trying to find the old copy of SMR that had the magic article to see if this was his card.

In looking up the Cert number, the card is appears to be authentic. I know there is a problem when you send in signed cards for grading AND authentication in getting the cards added to the registry database. I personally have 25 or so cards that are graded at home that will not register if I try to add them to my set. I spoke to Cosetta about this and I need to send her the cert numbers and then she will add them to the database manually. I need to get off my duffer and do this as someone has elected to finish his set and juat passed me on the registry for the throne again!

To the people who are sitting on the side waiting to bid, good luck. I think I'll sit this one out as I already have one of these beauties in my set image
  • Don't go making yourself too comfortable in my chair Jake, you ain't gonna have it for long image
  • I know. I know. Considering we have virtually the same score right now and you still have like 10 uncommons you can easily add, I know how it really is. But until you add them, I AM KING OF THE MOUNTAIN!!! Muahahahahaha...
  • No problem Len, glad I could help image

I looked at the signatures closely too and they're different as well; this one is more horizontal while Dan's moves up L-R. I would guess they are 2 different cards and this auction is for the more recent one. Not a big deal, but I really hate false advertising.

Best of luck on the auction Jake - I will be watching this one too, as I am quite happy with my current Lotus just like Len (although mine isn't a 10... sigh).

Quick question - is it the card that's graded 10 or the signature?

I had previously thought that when signature cards went in for grading it was the signature rather than the grade which was the subject of the grade.

The card still looks pretty nice either way ... but is it actually a 10 in its own right?
  • Hi Michael,

The card is indeed a Gem Mint 10. The DNA part of the process is there to verify that the signature is authentic and has nothing to do with the final grade of the card. I do believe PSA will "grade" signatures but am not up to speed on teh exact process as I have never had need for the service or looked into getting it done.

    Hmm... tempting!

Although I can't help but feel that there are more deserving homes for it to go to than mine, so I won't be bidding. Good luck to those that are

(Oh, and if you end up with a spare 10 without graffitti on it let me know as I might be interested in that ;-)

For those looking for a picture of Dan's card, you can find it here: http://www.psacard.com/smrweb/backissues/smr0107/magic.chtml ... pretty obvious from the picture that they are different cards.

Amazing that given how few PSA 10s there are, 2 of them have been signed by Chris Rush! Maybe he just signed a lot of Alpha Lotus's...
  • I wonder if the signature will help or hinder the value of the card. It definitely makes it more unique, but a lot of people shy away from signed cards.

  • It sold for $9,500.

    Any opinions on that price?
  • Rudy must have been low on funds image

Seriously, that price seems in line with what I would've expected. A very nice sum for a very nice card.

I suspect the price was pretty much the same as it would have been if it had been unsigned.

I think I'd actually prefer a graded card with the signature on the PSA case rather than the card if I was going to get a signed card.

But then you'd have to get the signature verified. And put the case inside another card. That would be a bit silly. :-)
  • yea i was...lol

    I stopped at 9,000.00

I didnt really want a signed alpha 10. But i figured if i could get it for around 8k i would take it.

I dont really like signed cards. I always felt it took away from that "Perfect" condition card.

  • I agree with Rudy here.

While indeed very nice, I could not see myself paying as much for a signed 10 as one that was unsigned. Though I AM a fan of signed MTG cards in general, I do feel that it takes away just a touch of the pristine factor of a card to get it autographed.

I think the price came in the range of what I expected and I am glad to see it was 50% higher than the last Beta 10 that sold last year proving that Alpha is the KING of Magic sets!
  • Len is Right here ALPHA is the premier set.

    As for UNSIGNED vs. SIGNED.

    Depends on the collector.

Time will tell if the signed ones will be worth more.

  • In my opinion, based off of the history of all card collectibles, signed will never be worth more than unsigned (usually less).

This is a good thing, because I personally prefer signed image

Of course, that goes only for cards I get signed myself - unless the person is deceased I want to get the auto on my own.

  • Jared,

I agree. The auto cards are very tough to find. I don't think the buyer for the Lotus on eBay was legit. What type of condition or cards do you have signed?

  • Hey Dan,

I have LOTS of signed cards; without going through my collection and doing a hard count, I would have to guess around 500 - 1000. Some of the artists I've met over the years...

Anson Maddocks - very quiet, but super polite (did a great sketch for me on a folder of prints)
    April Lee
    Chris Rush
Dan Frazier - funny guy (dry humor, like Bob Newhart)
    Douglas Shuler
    Heather Hudson
Jeff A Menges - my first artist ever image
Jeff Miracola - first to alter a card for me (and I never even asked)
Kaja & Phil Foglio - both nice, but Kaja will bend over backwards for you
    Ken Meyer Jr
    L. A. Williams
    Larry Elmore
    Lawrence Snelly
    Margaret Organ-Kean
    Mark Brill
Mark Poole - own one of his originals (Dwarven Weaponsmith)
Mark Rosewater - an absolute character and huge fan of the game!!!
    Mark Tedin
Melissa A Benson (Jacuzzi) - own one of her orginals (Norwood Priestess)
    Mike Raabe
    Ne'Ne' Thomas
Pete Venters - spent a great deal of time talking about the industry and behind the scenes stuff, great guy
Randy Asplund Faith - fun to talk to, my first print (Riptide)
Richard Garfield - quiet and unassuming, passed him in a crosswalk in Milwaukee and chatted for a bit
    Rob Alexander
    Ron Spears
Ron Spencer - fun guy to talk to, own 2 of his originals (Anthroplasm and Plated Spider, along with mods of their respective cards)
    Susan Van Camp

I also have written or emailed various artists, some of the standouts are...

    Donato Giancola
    Mark Zug
    Quinton Hoover
rk post - fastest response times ever, great guy
Terese Nielsen - fun and witty, seems like she'd be fun to hang out with
Thomas M Baxa - another great guy, have my eye on one of his paintings image

I'm sure I'm forgetting many of them from over the years. I went to GenCon from 1994-2002 and hit a few other cons, PTQ's and tournys along the way. My signed cards are all over the place, but most of them are pre-design change and are NM-Mint. My primary collecting goal is my album set, which consists of 1 of every card PICTURE, pre-design change. I try to get the best version of each card - primarily mint, black bordered, foil, English, and signed, if possible. As such, I have lots of cards I could submit to PSA/DNA, but I don't want to pull them out of my albums. I do have about a dozen or so Unlimited/Revised that I might submit, as they aren't needed for my set. I also have many Alpha/Betas in my playstock that would most likely get 8's or 9's - not really worth the $20 grading fee, IMHO.

If I had a signed Gem 10 Lotus, that would be different, of course...

  • Jared,

    Very Impressive!

Out of all the artists in the earlier sets, which one(s) are the hardest by far to get one?

You can have the lotus, if you tell me the winning numbers to the next lottery (actually i ONLY need 5/6 numbers).

  • Hardest to get? Gosh I really can't say. To be honest there are so many cards I want signed and so many artists to contact that I'm not even close to being done. As such, I haven't really had any problems - any artist who shows at an event I usually want to meet, and I can't keep up with my mail as is (had to take a break 6 months ago).

Eventually I hope to get everything signed. I figure as I get closer to the end I might be able to see who is tough, but for right now no one stands out.

I'm kind of surprise you recognised Richard Garfield - did you come over all tongue tied and giddy when you met him? lol

We'd probably all like to know whether at that point you normally carried cards round with you, or whether you had to run home and get them. :-)
  • image

Actually it isn't as crazy as it sounds - I was attending GenCon and decided to walk downtown for some lunch when I ran into him (he was at the 'Con as well). I recognized him and stopped to say "hi". The person who was with me kept walking while I stood with Garfield and chatted for a few minutes (mostly me just being a fanboy - LOL). Afterwards I went to lunch and caught up with my buddy. While we ate I asked him why he didn't stop too and he said he was hungry and didn't feel like chatting with yet another of my friends. Needless to say, he kicked himself very hard when I informed him just whom this "friend" was image .

Since I had my decks on me, and it was very common for me to pull cards out and get them signed by various artists when I ran across them, my buddy asked which cards I pulled out for Garfield to sign. It was then that I realized I committed the ultimate fanboy mistake - I was so busy gushing I forgot to ask him to sign anything image

I still regret it to this day......
