Mastro Auctions

Ever since I joined the PSA boards I've been hearing about Mastro Auctions and sales/buys on there site.

Is Mastro like eBay? Is it better to sell on eBay or Mastro? Also, just wanted to know how many people use Mastro and what they think.

I mainly just buy cards and some oddball. If Mastro fees are cheaper than eBay to list, I may put a few items on next week.

Mastro Auctions are unlike ebay in that the buyer pays about a 20% premium above and beyond the total auction price. As a seller, I'd consider Mastro if I had some high end items to put up for sale, but for anything worth $500 or less, ebay is your best option in most cases.

It also costs $75 to register before you're even able to participate, but the catalogues are really nice and almost worth the fee, IMO. Like anything else, you just have to factor in the premium when you place your bid.

The best stuff will only ever show up on Mastro, REA, etc.
The auction catalogs are probably the best reference material out there, and if you can win 5 figure lots the break value makes them a bit of a deal.
Competition can be brutal for the lots under about 15K, and that is often where the prices get a bit insane.

One drawback to these auctions also is that a winning bidder cannot use Paypal or a credit card to make payment. Only checks and MO, or bank transfers are accepted. In addition to that, and the 20% premium, there are NO returns, so if an item is not to your liking, or otherwise not as described, you are stuck with it. I also think that they ought to at least be scanning and showing the backs of all these vintage GAI rack packs up for sale. For racks of that value, a buyer ought to be able to at least see the front and back of the pack. If anyone here listed any of these racks on ebay, I'm sure the seller would be expected to do at least as much, especially if his policy were "all sales final".

Mastros does over grade the raw cards in their lots, so they are the same as ebay in that respect.

agree with Grote15 on the backs of the racks here. I sent them an e-mail asking for scans of the backs. We'll see what they do.

No, not at all. I am agreeing with you. I have had personal experience with Mastro and on a scale of 1 to 10 ( I bought a high grade 57' set not too long ago and I would have to rate the experience overall a "6.5"). You have to be really careful with them especially on raw as they definitely overgrade them. That near mint - near mint to mint BS raw rating they give is a bunch of major BS. Anyone who buys from them better know what they are doing or they will definitely get their ass handed to them. I mean you better know your raw card values and if they rate the raw high (80% nmt-mt), just consider most of the raw.... ex-mint. It's what I do now. chaz

I'm not saying that it's not, you just better know your stuff. You don't stay a virgin long in this business. I have been in the card business a long time and they taught me some things. chaz
