What's your favorite and least favorite football set from the 70's?

10. 1971 (too much like 1975 baseball)
9. 1970 (again, very similar to baseball's 1968 burlap sack design but better executed with the oval frames. still pretty bad though)
8. 1972 (not a bad design but too colorful for my taste. I like black or white borders)
7. 1978 (too much color in the borders)
6. 1977 (not a bad design but a little too "busy" for me)
5. 1974 (interesting goal post frame, but it doesn't work for me)
4. 1979 (one of the better designs, somewhat reminisient of the 1973 set)
3. 1975 (simple ribbon and helmet design which I like, I only wish they were color coordinated with the team colors.)
2. 1976 (The 1976 set is a close second for best set. The football logo's would have really made this set far and away the best if they had color coordinated them with team colors.)
1. 1973 (Simple clean design. Again, I only wish they would have color coordinated the accent strips with the team colors. I have no idea why they wouldn't have unless it had something to do with not having a logo license.)

I'd love to do a Topps football set run myself. But I need to first get 1980s and 1990s before I can worry about any 1970s, although the 1978 and 1979 sets are quite affordable ($100 each at BBCE). If it weren't for Montana/Elway/Marino driving up the 1981 and 1984 set prices I could already easily get started. But as it stands now, I'll probably have to wait until next Christmas season before I can get a "starter run" of 1978-93 at BBCE (he's missing the 1991 for some reason).

  • I would have to say I like all the sets from the 70's.
My personal fav is 1978 because its got Tony D's Rookie along with a super Dallas Cowboys set plus I like the design.
On the down side my least favorite is the 1974.
    Chinooks RULE!!!
  • Good topic. I am partial to 1970s Topps football in that these set spanned the a good part of my years as a card collecting youth.

1973 has always been my favorite-I like the crisp/simple design. 1976 is a close second with 1979 taking the third spot on the podium.
Never really cared for 1974 because of the centering problems.

Obviously, I like the 72 set, with 76 close, because it's the first set I bought a lot of and it takes me back.

In spite of it's several nice rookies, I would rank the 71 set last, more because of the goofy little cartoon player on the front than the color scheme. Even so, it's not bad.

All 70's football sets have something to offer (the crisp photography of the 70 and 79, the neat ribbon design of the 73, etc.)
