Exactly what obscure vintage tobacco card do I have?

Please tell me that only about 10 exist, and that it is sought after by millions, and that it's worth thousands! image

I found this today in a box out in the garage. It is from a vintage collection that I bought recently. Here is a scan of the front (with the sleeve that I found it in) and the back. I would like to know what it is and approximate value. I could not find it in the SCD catalog. Notice it says "T8".

By the way, I found a 1961 Topps Whitey Ford and a 1960 Topps Carl Yastrzemski rookie in the same box. image

What does "another United Tobacco Set" mean. Are they pretty common?

Why are they not in the SCD? Or, if they are, what are they listed as?

  • It's from the 1936 U.T.C. Sports and Pastimes in South Africa set. Unfortunately, I don't think you'll be retiring early on it. image

PS. I just checked the pop report and there's been one graded and it got a 7.
  • Frank, I don't believe it to be rare but, more importantly, there just isn't any demand for it. There are a slew of sets like these from the 20s and 30s that depict generic images of a particular sport. Without having a specific athlete depicted they don't garner much attention. My guess is you'd get somewhere between $5-10 for it at auction if someone happened to see it and thought it was cool.

  • Very interesting card though. I couldn't find it in the SCD 2005 Standard Baseball Catalogue #14 either. Nice card though.

It's not in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards because, unless they have a long hobby history of collector demand, the catalog does not list "generic" cards and does not list most non-Latin "foreign" cards. They used to, but space was needed for each year's 20,000+ shiny new cards.

Dont you wish the SCD would break the big boook into two !
Old Stuff and Shiny new crap...ISCD claims that it wouldnt be "cost effective" to do it that way...I would buy a new book if it was just the old vintage half....I have the 2000 and 2004 book..probably wont buy the 2008 book ...... Scott

Nice card Frank .Sorry its not the one that would let you retire early ...
