A friend gave me a pretty neat item, a late 20's Standard Coin Book. Guess this was the precursor to the Redbook? Thought I'd share a few pages.

$.50 for a trade dollar? Were they not legal tender at that point?
I like cheese, notes, and coins. In that order.

Ooh where is TDN when you need him? image If I'm not mistaken, in 1887 they were demonetized? Maybe that was the bullion value of them at the time?

Seem about right for bullion. Silver was between $.40-.50 an ounce at that time

  • Trade dollars were demonitized in 1876 and after that were basicly valued at bullion.

And don't trust that book for being actual values for what the coins were worth ot the time. That is a dealers below wholesale buying guide intended to be sold to the general public in the hopes that they would then sell him the coins at those way below market prices. Same thing that Mehl did with his Star Rare Coin books.

Thanks a lot. So it's not the precursor to the redbook, more like the bluebook image I saw the showing prices paid on the first page and wondered what that was.
