Player Nicknames, How did they get them ?

I have always been interested in baseball players nicknames, I have always wondered how they ever came up with nicknames like
"Big Poison"
"The Flying Dutchman"
"The Big Unit"
And thousand's of others, Does anyone have any interesting stories to share about how some of the players got thier nicknames ?

This from Wikipedia about Paul "Big Poison" Waner and his younger brother Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner:

"A possibly apocryphal story claims that their nicknames reflect a Brooklyn Dodgers fan's pronunciation of "Big Person" and "Little Person." In 1927, the season the brothers accumulated 460 hits, the fan is said to have remarked, "Them Waners! It's always the little poison on thoid (third) and the big poison on foist (first)!" But given that Lloyd was actually taller, this story would seem somewhat incongruous."

    And Wikipedia for Randy Johnson.

"Perhaps the most infamous fact about Randy Johnson is his nickname, "The Big Unit". During batting practice in 1988, the 6'10" Johnson, then with the Montreal Expos, collided head-first with outfielder Tim Raines, prompting his teammate to exclaim, "You're a big unit!"[citation needed]. The nickname has stuck ever since."

Wasn't that Booger from Revenge of the Nerds?
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

  • Has anyone noticed how there really hasn't been any good nicknames given out recently, say in the last few years. The most recent good ones (that aren't a play on their name like Smoltzie or A-rod):

    Allen 'the Answer' Iverson
    Frank 'the Big Hurt' Thomas

and so on...just seems there's no imagination with players nowadays...

    I always liked Pepper Johnson.

When playing for Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, they had a team breakfast and he was putting pepper on his cereal.

I wonder what Andrew MacFarlane put on his cereal?

I like Al 'Airplane' Edwards. I saw a picture of him in an old SI holding up two basketballs away from his body. That guy had a freakish wingspan.

I always thought that nickname came from a locker-room showing. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.
