Sad. Still, I guess it's not a surprise. He lived longer than most long-term quadriplegics do, as many of them develop circulatory and respiratory problems much earlier in life.
Ever since first seeing the Stingley hit (I was 12 at the time), my first instinct when a player goes down motionless is to intently watch their legs and feet. "Wiggle your feet, dammit. Move a leg!"
That is sad - though it was nice to see what Stingley was able to do with his life after that hit. One thing I am surprised about - I remember reading about the incident, but I was very young at the time. Tatum hit him like that during an exhibition game? I didn't realize that.
It is also sad that Tatum never reconciled with him. I would feel terrible about that even if it was a clean hit. Tells me alot about Tatum when he only wanted to meet with Stingley to promote a book.

Tatum got a bad rap for that. He played and hit hard on every play the way he was taught. Yeah, (sigh) it was a pre-season game but does it make sense for players to play at a speed less then they train for? I don't think so.
