Does anyone what to take a guess what the 73 rack with Schmidt will sell for? 1500?

Everything in this auction will bring at least 3 times what they're worth. Amazing stuff. '72 rack with Aaron and two Bench's? I've never even seen something like an 89 Topps rack with a Ripken, Clemens, and Ozzie on top, and I used to collect racks with stars on top back then. How in the hell did they find an unopened 72 rack with those three cards on top? Is all this stuff coming from one collection?

It had to come from one collection....It just goes to show how much is still out there....Those racks are so sweeeeeet!!!

If a regular 73 rack has a price tag of 1,000 from BBCE, this one will definately push closer to 3,000 or better....

Oh that 68 rack is gorgeous! Look at that beautifully centered Bench rookie and a nice 2nd year Carew. Nice. Very Nice.

Each one of those racks should bring $4k at least.

What would be more desirable...a rack pack or cello pack with Schmidt on top?

Once you get into the rarified air of older packs with stars on top, it really doesnt matter because the value lies in the opened pack rather than opening it up to grade the card....

Wow, those racks are awesome. I'd bet that the 1973 rack with Schmidt on top goes for 3K or better. A rack with him on top is definitely worth more than a cello, though both racks and true (jumbo) cellos are scarce from that year.

3 major auctions ending nearly at the same time. Shows that there are some big bucks
floating around out there. With the recent sale of the Gretsky Wagner there will be some
investors taking a shot at some of the big ticket items. Myself, I can only look at the
pictures and wish. Kinda like looking at Playboy when I was younger. image

I too was thrilled to see th racks when posted. Then started thinking--anyone stop to wonder if they are actually legit? GAI has had more than its share of problems in the past 6-8 months. Not sure who the person mentioned by Mastro in its intro to the rack section is--supposedly came from his collection--but , I recalled that Steve Hart had said on a different board that he had been approached several months ago by someone with a number of bad '68 and '69 racks--many with stars on top. He also said that it was difficult to tell them as bad.

And of course, just because they are from Mastro does not mean that it could not be bad. They hide behide the GAI slab.

    Just throwing it out there.
  • They're real. The ones that Steve was talking about were being showed around the National last year and then on Ebay. The crimping on the packs was nothing close to what Topps uses. GAI may have its bad packs floating around out there, but these are definately the real deal....

manny , are you reading the catalog to get the name , I was wondering if these came from frisch since it is in the section with his vending. I still don't have the hardcopy catalog.

If I recall correctly , the fakes that steve saw were obvious fakes where the header card was printed from a computer.

as far as 73 racks , i picked this high # rack up in their collectors auction for about 650 which I thought was a great deal.

That is a great rack man. Where is the info or header card kept, on the back?

the red sox card is the header much like the 71's that have a card punched as a header

    FWIW-

I have probably seen 5x as many Schmidt cellos than rack packs.

I think collectors prefer the cellos, but the rack packs are definitively rarer
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

About 5 years ago I saw some bogus rack packs at Cleveland shows...One was a 1971 sixth series bb rack that was recrimped nice. There was a also a 1970 Topps baseball rack with Rod Carew on top too. Neither were graded but did show up on ebay ungraded about 6 months later and sold for big bucks. I know grading isnt perfect but its always good to have another set of eyes to look for tampered packs. (experienced eyes)

There were a bunch of bogus 1969 & 1970 rack packs for sale on ebay about 6 months back. They were bad looking fakes as I recall, and one even had a Jackson RC on top. Though they went for nowhere near market value, I was surprised at how much they did go for. The bad part about the bogus crap is that it depresses the value of all packs, as buyers become skeptical or cynical (with good reason) about the authenticity of even legitimate packs.

Here is the info from Mastronet about the racks:

Most hobbyists know Scott Welkowsky for his dazzling collection of championship rings, professional athlete awards, and sports memorabilia. What may not be as well known is Welkowsky’s fondness for one of the hobby’s simple pleasures – sports cards. Welkowsky began his hunt for these cardboard treasures as a youngster in 1974 and soon became partial to cellos and rack packs, because, he explained, "you can see the stars." He amassed only "the best of the best" cellos, rack packs, and wax packs that were out there—items that have been the pride and joy of his personal collection for years—and now Mastro Auctions is proud to bring this amazing compilation to the marketplace.
