Topps uses 1971's black borders for 2007, why not a bold colorful 1975 style set for 2008? =)

Okay, all of you know how 2007 Topps is done in black borders just like the 1971 set (as well as color coded squares to match teams), right? Well, am I the only one in this congregation who thinks it would be so, so awesome if Topps were to make a really bold, colorful bordered 2008 Topps set, based on the classic 1975? I have always dreamed of owning a really nice 1975 Topps set (once all my other projects are done) and it would be so kewl if Topps went that route for next year's model.

Am I wrong?

I don't collect modern, but being a Cardinals fan I had to build this set.
I like the design, but just like the '71 set these borders are FRAGILE.

Still, the cards are quite stunning.

But since the 2007 cards are on much better quality glossy stock, that should make the borders less fragile, no?

  • That should be the Heritage set around 2024....of course if they did it next year maybe it would look something like this.

  • Noooo..... Topps should be white ~ I hate these 2007s!

Bowman has been doing them for quite a few years now and I cant tell you how many times I open up a pack just to be disappointed in a little white curl on one of the edges. I also see it at card shops where they will have similar condition cards of some of the best rookies. I opened a few of the 07 Topps packs and surprise surprise...

Personally I like the design of the cards ~ in white! The Opening day set looks great IMO and I wish they would have reversed the two. Topps did the colored border thing for a few years in the early 2000s and it just didnt seem to work right then, why did they have to do it again?

Topps, please ~ if you want to do a fancy colored border can you make that the OD set in the future with the base set a more traditional white border? I for one would be very thankful!

Now, same goes for your idea on the rainbow idea, I wouldnt mind them making it but I would rather see it as the Opening day and the regular set housing more traditional "Topps" looking cards.

Also, anyone remember how they did the 2001 set in turqouise borders? I was really looking forward to the forest green borders they had in the pre-production and I was quite let down when I found out they did those silly turqouise borders instead. image

I would like to see a colorful design similar to the 75 or even the 72. Regarding the 1990, all I can say is not all color designs are viewed the same. The 1990 does not compare to the 75's or 72's.

BTW HA, I love that Pujols card. Though, he will probably be retired by 2024.

No, try 1991 Fleer baseball; talk about boring... image

And what's everyone's problem with bold/colorful designs? I think the 1990 Topps set is kinda kewl, and it's my ultimate goal to get as nice a raw 1975 Topps set as possible, which will come after I finish all my other baseball card projects, so it'll be like the finishing touch if you will. image

Topps should leave the direct knock-offs to the Heritage line, but they could offer designs that are "inspired" by their past sets for the base brand set each year. They could do a 1975ish looking set like the cards below. It looks new, but also has some elements of the old sets that we all liked.

1991 Fleer was boring but the 1990 Topps set was so garish, it looked like the set came with print smudge on the cards but that was the design! I like the yellow fleer set they did, nothing wrong with bold colors as long as it's done classy (1972) or trashy with style (1975) maybe. I want Topps to be innovative in their main set and not let their other sets do it for them. They should make their base set their best set every year. I am tired of them doing the UD thing of taking 1 years set and moving the name or changing font type and you have a new set. I thought in 1991 we saw a new era but by 2001 it was back to the old miniscule changes every year. This years set is at least dramatically different, if they were white bordered they would look alot like last years set. Nice mock ups everyone. It seems we can design sets freehand much better than Topps with a whole design department.

I like those two, but I think the "team plate" (and only the team plate) should match the team colors and use at least twice as many color combos as the 1975 set did (but include all the 1975 border combos); boy I can't wait to get my hands on a really nice 1975 set...

I like the 1990 Topps set. It is great for PSA collector as well....hard to get PSA 10's with those borders.

I do agree that the 1991 Fleer set is likely the worst set ever made, and to make it worse, the cool rookies (like Bagwell) are in the update set. It did have one thing going for it however. I think that was the first Fleer set with Pro-Visions?

1991 Fleer baseball isn't that bad, at least they have some decent pictures. 1991 Fleer Football, now that's a nasty set. Ugly green borders, cropped pictures of the players on faded color backgrounds. ??? I remember buying a box of that crap back when I was a kid, shopping with my folks at Price Club. I liked the 1990 Fleer football set (which was somewhat hot at the time), so figured the 1991 set would be cool. Wrong.

I mean, the other set from that era that cropped player pictures and put them on weird backgrounds was Skybox, and those were kinda cool. 1991 Fleer Football was a hack job.
