vent: idiots at the post office

Mail witch PRINTED my postage for a 6X9 bubble mail, delivery confirmation and postage comes to $4.55 WTF????? asked her why it is so much and she said ...get this "it is not thick enough, so it MUST go priority" The other employees stopped what they were doing, and were giving her dirty looks. She stuttered "well do you want to me change it??" with an attitude. I said non chalantly "naw it is only 4.00 diffrence" I am writing a letter to the postmaster! The kicker is that it was a RETURN of an ebay item which I was charged 3$ shipping and the sender's label said 88 cents!

I don't get it. How was she being an idiot? By following the post office's rules? Please explain.

I don't understand why the item had to be sent Priority. Didn't she give you any other options?

Has to be 3/4" thick. Do what I do. Stuff it with bubble wrap or peanuts. Paper towels work well too and add very little weight.
  • In the P.O in the small farming town where I work there was a sub at the P.O. and once he tried to send all my packages priority. Said he had to as well. I didnt ask why, just said " no, I send packages alot, you messed up somewhere." I ended up sending them normal.

The bubble mailer has to be 3/4" thick or has to go priority to get delivery confirmation. If it's less than 3/4" thick it gets processed with our "flats" envelopes, magazines, mailings etc and they are afraid we'll miss the sticker and not scan it.

If it's 3/4" thick it goes as a parcel and we have a better chance of catching the sticker.

Most people stick one of those styrofoam peanuts inside and it makes them fat enough. We have a box of them at the counter at my office. But then we also have the paypal seller requirements hanging there too. We try to be helpful at my little office!

I hope that explains the "why" but she definitely should have asked first.

Before you write your letter - did she ask if it was liquid, fragile, hazardous or perishable?

She had a responsibility to the consumer to advise him that the package was not thick enough to send with delivery confirmation unless sent priority. She was absolutely in the wrong by not helping the customer properly.

Thankfully, the employees at my post office are awesome! Very helpful and kind.

I don't disagree that the post office lady could have handled it differently/more diplomatically. But I would think that people who sell alot on eBay should know the delivery confirmation rules.

I can't remember if she asked about frag/liq/hazardous, my OTHER post office lady was next to her and muttered something and gave her a look! HA! How could a bubble mailer be less than 3/4 of an inch? She didn't bust out a tape measure! I think she should have asked, paypal is not working to ship this afternoon for some reason, so I ran down to the PO and added this to my 4 packages to get my refund. Serves me right!

Most of the small ones are only a 1/2 inch thick.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • This same thing happens to me. They always tell me to add paper inside to make it more thicker

I frequently receive bubble mailers with DC that are well short of 3/4" - they've never been changed to priority mail. Perhaps if the Post Office enforced their rules more consistently, there would be less confusion.
