IF you were thinking of buyer a Roman coin on eBay, which image would you prefer to see?

Both are very good, but I'd prefer to see whichever one more accurately represents the actual appearance of the coin image -Preussen

Preussen thanks for the reply. You are 100% correct in that. I think #1 looks more like the coin. I'm just wondering if some people prefer the darker background to the lighter one.

I always liked contrast, myself. Makes it easier for my eyes to focus on the actual coin. Dark coin - white background, white coin - dark background.

    Just my 2c.

I prefer the contrast that the dark background provides on a coin this light (conversely, I think a dark copper would look better on the white background).

The highlights are "blown out" a bit though. If you can't adjust the lighting (more diffuse light?) or camera settings to compensate, I'd tweak the pic to darken the highlights and midtones ever so slightly:

SilverEagles92, I would love to do it like that but I don't know how to get a totally black background like that. Is it possible using Microsoft Paint?

Don, you would need something a bit more powerful than Paint. If you'd like - you can forward your images to me in the future and I can crop them for you, similar to what SilverEagle did.

I like the darker background - especially since you're dealing with some intricacies with the rim, the darker one shows the edge better (the void at 12:00 on the rev is much easier to see with the dark background for instance). As for the picture, just a little too much reflection for me, but it certainly isn't "Bad".

I always like dark backgrounds even if I don't always provide them. Don, I've seen you take pictures of auction items with a dark background and that has to be the easiest way.

By the by, pic 1 is entirely satisfactory.image

I like the one tweaked by coinpictures. Your images are too light to make out much. I prefer the darker background too!

Actually, MS Paint is what I used. I cropped the coin from the original images, and then colored in the previous background with black paint. Took about 10 minutes, but the product looks great.

I prefer the image of the coin itself more in pic 1, but I do also like the darker background. I have some silver Roman denarii and I know that the first picture should look more like the coin than the second one. Even though I like the darker background, it seems that it may the cause of why I don't think it would look more like the actual coin. It seems that the second image is unnaturally bright.

Number 2 looks a little washed out, I'd go with number 1.
