1971 Topps Basketball

I havnt seen any threads regarding this great looking set. Is there anyone around here working on it for the registry ?

I was around 40% complete in PSA 8 and 9 when I sold mine off a few years ago when I needed some $$.

Lately Ive been thinking of working on it again and wanted to see if there is much interest from other collectors.

Yeah they are GD...a definate sign of the times !

I think the colors are what drew me to the set in the first place.

Im not really sure if I want to pursue the set again in graded form or just put together a nice looking raw set and throw it in an album.

  • I'm going to start on this collection sometime in the near future. I'm finishing up my '81 set and then either going after the '71 or '72 sets. Yeah - the colors are great. The memory lane auction has a PSA 10 Chamberlain... too bad they didn't make a huge catalog with pictures and send it out to people. oh wait... Wonder what it will go for.

Great set, Hall of Famers and stars, great look, what is not to like...

I am working on this set and recently started to get focused to get it done. I am right at 50% complete and a GPA of 7.5...

My ultimate goal is to get the set completed with a GPA of 8.

I started this set with a hugh PSA 7 common lot I purchased almost 1 year ago... All my stars are in PSA 8...

Love this set, especially the trio stickers, as a budding 9 year old these were the first basketball wax packs I opened. Use to sneak down to the Kwik Shop during recess and buy (and probably steal image ) a few packs.

Currently have 2 complete sets and 1 1/2 of the trio sets. Have been grading the stars, the sharp commons that survived 30 plus years in a shoebox and some trios, sets are named jmoran19.

I have 3 graded Trios (10/11/12 PSA 6, 13/14/15 PSA 8 and 13a/14a/15a PSA 6) for trade or sell if anyone is interested, just send me a PM, John.

    Oh, forgot, also have these

bumping this one up as I am trying to build a set for my personal collection, and hopefully complete it someday so I can participate with my 1st Registry set......would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be trying to liquidate or simply sell off extras.

I love the design of this set and it has a strong RC crop.

Need #20 SPENCER HAYWOOD in a PSA 8
    #190 CHARLIE SCOTT in a PSA 8 or 9

Het recball keep ur grubs off charlie scot...I need that one also.

Haywood is a toughie. I paid over vcp by a lot from a fellow psa board member to get mine.

I am slowly working on the 71 set in psa 8 or above. I'm in 38th place and 29%

Have all the bigger stars and rc's.

As I upgrade to a 9 anyone who wants 8's let me know

A guy had a set break on e-bay a couple of weeks ago with reasonable buy-it-now prices that helped me get alot of tuff cards, but I missed out on the Haywood and Scott cards.
The last two Haywood cards in 8 didn't go for that much, but I can't afford a 9.

I bought this Charlie Scott raw for about $11 and got the 8 on it:

I'm still looking for a nicely-centered PSA 8 or 9 Mack Calvin. Ditto for a Mel Daniels.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I use to have a few 71 stars as a kid. The West and Maravich.

-I think last year there was a PSA 10 Ricky Barry rc, and PSA 10 Alcindor that sold for $2 k each, on ebay. I think what keeps me out of the psa 9 and 10 market is the belief these cards really aren't that tough in high grade.

For example, in 72/73 Topps, there have been a bunch of 10's graded in the last few years.

For some reason, some cards are easy. Like the 71/72 Nate Thurmond. There's a bunch of those in high grade. Other cards like the #1 Robertson will probably never go up very high in the population. The color of the cards really pop, like the pink or blue background.

I can remember about 10+ years ago I sent in 5 71 thurmonds just because they were that nice.
all 9's and sold them for $40 ea and kept one. They actually have held thier value.

Andy...u just beat me out bidding on the scott. Gregmorris had some nice gradable cards.
You don't really need that card and it certainly doesn't fit your collection. So I can take it off your hands. btw....I won some others

Is anybody doing the all time top 30 aba set?

There is a ton of 71's inc.

  • The 71 set is my 2nd favorite set behind the 72 set. I see there's a 1971 Topps HOF set in the registry, which includes 35 cards. That might be a good stepping stone to the whole set. I've got a 71 Maravich which is part of my Maravich sets. Love the design, and while not as vibrant, the 72 Icee Bear set includes images from the 71 Topps Set.

Its because he's a double print. The 28 player cards on the sheet below are printed twice, as well as the 2nd checklist. The first checklist is a triple print. 233 cards in the set + 29 DP's + 2 for triple print = 264 cards, the standard size of a uncut sheet in the 60's and 70's. John

    That's great info.

Some of the 29 I recognize as very easy to get in higher grades.

It would be cool if someone could post an incut sheet.

That makes sense. The Gus Johnson and Jerry Lucas are also easy in a 10, 7 each.

The Connie Hawkins though, is still fairly tough. 36 9's and 3 10's. Less than Maravich or Calvin Murphy.

Kareem's 2nd and 3rd year cards have always seemed kind of underrated. Considering, he's the all time leading scorer, 6x mvp, 6 rings. He's probably been over shadowed by more powerful centers (Chamberlain then, and Russell. Shaq recently). And the importance of centers in general in the NBA has gone down.

Here is another 44 card block from the ABA half sheet that would total 132 cards (12 rows x 11 columns), still on the hunt for the other 44. My guess is this is the bottom 4 rows as the ABA free throw card and Billy K card's pops are lower in an "8" than the ABA scoring and Ralph S. cards.

Just had my first sub with a group of more than one or two 71 basketball pop. Pretty happy with the results. A few real toughies, the Cunningham is a pop 1, the Ellis 9 a pop 4 and the Stallworth one of the tougher 8s too. I will probably be listing them all in the coming weeks, so feel free to pm if you need anything:

    Just down to one card:

    #20 Spencer Haywood in a PSA 8
    Would pay well over VCP.
  • I'm not collecting the set per se, but I've picked up a few raw cards and have the Maravich in a PSA 8, but today I got this Beasley in the mail. I don't know a lot about the player or the team, but I'm from the DFW area and the image just spoke to me. Visually, it looks better than a 8, but has some staining on the back. It doesn't bother me at all. I'll take cards like this every day of the week.

Nice going Recbball. Great accomplishment. How long did it take to complete your set?
I think it's one of the best sets from the 1970s.

I've often thought of starting it myself. I have a few of the key cards already.
  • recbballrecbball Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭
    Thanks cardbender.
    Started 4/30/12 - Finished 10/15/13
I had some of the key cards from the set when I started.
I decided to jump in when I saw a large lot of PSA 8s for sale on e-bay.
I always loved the design of this year, strong rookie class and first ABA cards make this a great set.

Jmoran19 - As mentioned nice Daniels. I sent in quite a few 71's about 5 months ago and was pretty disappointed with the grades as well. I thought I had a perfect Daniels and it came back a 7. I checked and checked and could not figure out why. I ended up selling it, and figure it is in an 8 holder now at least. I did get a PSA 9 on a Dave Debusschere card which was the lowest valued card in that grade I sent in.
