Just completed a collection!

It's always good to hear about a completed collection, and I finally completed one myself! When all that ugliness about the case break went on quite a while ago, many people were talking about unopened packs and collections of them. Seeing some of the vintage packs that members of the board here have I became a bit interested. I then realized that it wouldn't be too expensive to get a correlating collection of packs to go with my 1980=> base/traded sets from Topps. I asked around on the board about who was a "good" person to deal with and EVERYONE immediately said "Steve Hart".

I went to BBCEX and picked up great number of unopened wax packs. I then was directed to E-Bay and picked up a HUGE assortment of foil-packs from one dealer. Over the past month or so, I've slowly added to my collection packs from each series and the traded/update series. Digging around at Beckett.com, amazon.com and e-bay have led me to other dealers who sell individual packs. Just now, I purchased the final pack I needed. I now have in my possesion, or in the post on it's way to me, the following packs.

These are all Hobby packs and I actually have more fun holding and looking at these packs than I do looking at the cards themselves. Thanks everyone for getting me hooked on doing this. This was a nice "inexpensive" collection to pursue. image Once the rest of the packs arrive I'll take a big photo to show off. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

  • That's pretty sweet. I bet it's a nice collection to look at. Any plans to have the packs graded?

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • How do they grade packs? What is the criteria? Just curious.

I'm not quite sure if I'll bother to get the packs graded since it is a LOT of separate packs and some of them have the "been in the store bin for a while now" look which gives them charm but little grading potential. Currently I'm just trying to figure out a good way to display them. The one benefit to being graded is that they are in a nice storage container that can be displayed along with the binder that I'll have the cards in. I'm considering putting together some type of pack holder that could hang off a shelf underneath the binders and allow you to see all of the pack. There's a lot of options and right now the packs are just standing up inside of a few empty 2007 Topps Bonus boxes.

My next goal may be to get a full box of unopened packs for each of the packs that I have samples of. That might actually be easier than trying to find individual packs (which was the real challenge in this) but would be a LOT more expensive. I just can't wait for the last few packs to arrive. image (These are from a notoriously slow E-Bay shipper. image )

Nope. I was born in 1980, hence my collection of Topps cards from 1980 onward. I really have no desire to move backwards with either my cards or my packs. I'm actually happy to know that I have a collection I can call "complete" and just need to upgrade a few times each year. image

As promised, here is a photo of my pack collection. All regular series Topps Packs issued from 1980 through the present. This includes the Traded/Update packs when they were issued, and Series 1 and Series 2 from 1993 onward. It's a nice collection and now I have to figure out how to store and display them. image

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Thanks. This is perhaps one of the few good things to come out of the recent unopened pack debacle. It introduced me to unopened pack collecting and really got me interested in getting unopened packs to parallel my card collection. Now I have that collection complete and the hardest part is not opening up the packs. image (That's why I may get these cast in resin to prevent anyone from EVERY opening them up. If I could figure out how to do that without ruining them. imageimage )

If you really want to protect your investment, you might want to consider grading them all to make sure nothing happens to them. I've seen some packs where the combination of handling the pack and dried glue have caused the flaps to open. If you plan on keeping these in your colelction it's something to consider.

Yes, but the problem with getting them graded is that it will cost a fortune to get all of these packs graded and holdered. I really could care less about the grade of the pack. In fact, I could care less if the packs were "altered". (Though that is highly unlikely since all but maybe three or four of the packs were bought from Steve Hart, and the ones that weren't are either the foil packs which are pretty impossible to reseal or packs from years such as 1988 and 1989 where nobody would waste their time resealing them).

What I am currently looking for is a way to protect the packs similar to a hard sleeve for individual cards. With pack collecting growing in popularity, I think we may eventually see pack holders that can be used. For now, I'm just going to talk with some friends of mine who work with hard plastics and materials and try and figure out if a custom holder could be made.

If nothing else you could team bag them. (I use those little bags for everything).

Wow, good going! I too have an unopened pack collection, though my Topps run only goes 1981-1999 image I do have nearly all different kinds of 1980s wax/rack/cello packs though; I'll be sure to take pics once I get the chance.

BTW, I sent you a PM regarding how I can want to get a set of the 2000-2006 Topps packs of my own. And yes, I too would love to be able to collect all the wax boxes of those years too, but one, it's hard outside of BBCE to find truely unsearched ones, and two, they usually cost more (sometimes almost double) than a complete set.
