Say it Ain't So Joe

who says one game can't make a whole career?

1969 Namath

What if the Jets would not have drafted him and he would have ended up in the NFL with Bill Bidwell's normal 4-9-1 St. Louis Cardinals?
There were so many better quarterbacks that never will get a sniff at the HOF. One upset, play in New York and have a swagger and the world can be yours.

he was alot more than you give him credit for

I do agree the card asking price is insane though.
  • Some one will buy that. Anyone forward that to Fight 4 Old Dc yet?

    Jon, you watching??

he was alot more than you give him credit for

perhaps from a social aspect where the afl was ready not to merge if the jets got blown out in SB III.

from a pure statistics standpoint-No way is he a HOFER. If he does not win that game he is not in the HOF.

    Lifetime pass completion 50.1%
    TD's 173 Int's 220
Won two playoff games in his life. Got to only three.
Played in only 140 games in his career.
    5 pro bowls.

Let's Compare him to some other QB's from his era that are not in Canton and never will be:
    John Hadl
    Completion % 50.4
    TD's 244 Ints 268
    0-1 in playoffs
    played in 224 games
    6 pro bowls

    John Brodie completion % 55.0
    TD's 214 Ints 224
    2-3 in playoffs
    201 career games
    2 pro bowls

    Jim Hart
    51.1 Completion %
    209 TD's 247 Ints
    0-2 in playoffs
    201 career games
    4 pro bowls

    He did ALOT for football.

In fact, some would speculate, that if he had not burst onto
the scene already a legend, BB would have remained the
more popular sport for many more years. He captured folks'
imaginations and brought millions of new fans to FB.

All of that has value and must be considered part of the HOF
    package.

storm--i agree. but in a roundabout way no one is denying that his statistics alone are not hall of fame caliber.

the much copied "guarantee" in sports was his ticket in. again if it is colts 28 jets 10 in that game he crawls back in his hole, never winning another playoff game, and he doesn't get the cameo on the brady bunch, let alone the waverly wonders.

True, and getting absolutely sloshed on TV and hitting on a reporter on live, national television is good as well. image

Loaded Namath trying to kiss Suzie Kolber is the greatest moment in the history of television. For that alone, Namath should be in the hall.

for once i am trying to take the high road and stay clear of the "suzie, i want to kiss you" incident. from what i read joe checked himself in to rehab and is on the wagon. for that i give him credit.

whether he is an alcoholic 25 years after his playing days has no bearing on what he did in his playing days.

Checking himself into rehab was a PR move. He did what every celebrity that gets loaded and makes an a$$ out of himself does. I mean, if we can't make fun of people who get loaded on national television and sexually harass sideline reporters, who can we make fun of?

That was one of the funniest, yet at the same time saddest, things I have ever seen on TV. The silence and stunned look on everybody's face has yet to be eclipsed in a sporting event. Sad? Certainly. Outrageously funny? You bet.

As for the PR thing, I've yet to see Tony LaRussa or Dontrelle Willis check themselves in yet.
