How much more scarce is this date versus the 1846 d/d variety? I read somewhere it was but don't know for sure.

According to the Winter reference, there are 110-130 normal MM examples known (all grades) and 125-150 D/D MM examples known. In high grade, the separation is more dramatic with 15 or so normal MM examples in AU or better and 25 or so D/D's in AU or better. I do know of two MS examples of the 46-D (normal) that were previously unknown to the market that have arrived since the publication of the book: one MS-61 and one MS-62.
