Who says the Mint will extend the 50 State Quarter Program to include US Possessions?

I've looked all over the Mint site trying to find out whether the Mint intends to extend the 50 state quarter program after 2008 to include U.S. Possessions, such as Guam, Puerto Rico, etc. I've seen some indication on the boards here that that may be the case. Does anyone have a link to some information about it, or is this just speculation at this point? (I, for one, will be gladly done with the state quarter program at the end of 2008, and don't want anymore). Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks, coinman. That's disappointing news. I'm going to be done even if they do add the territories. image

Imagine if the program was further extended to include historic territories like Cuba and the Philippines? Cuba would be pretty funny but I'm not sure we want to give Castro a heart attack.

Legislation to add the Districts/Territories/Commonwealths has been introduced several times before and has failed to win approval. There is no certainty that these issues will win approval.

It might depend on how the sales numbers look for the program. If there are more collectors of state quarters this year than last year (as reflected by amount sold) than there will be more incentive to continue the program and more effort will be used to convince the powers that be to continue the program. If the sales are flat or going down, they will be more motivated to put their efforts elsewhere and repeat or continue another program that has shown growth. I think that is how most commodity business decisions are made.

But Guam's delegate to Congress, Madeleine Bordallo, says that's not a good idea.

"A separate program would only emphasize our differences rather than celebrate our commonalities," she says. Being part of the state quarter program would "mean recognition that we are a part of the U.S. family."

The territories, DC and Puerto Rico deserve recognition but to put them under the category of "state" quarters is silly.

Putting them in a different category is only logical and should not be considered an insult or a put down of any kind. They are as much
a part of the US as the states but are not officially "states".

If it makes them feel any better I would rather go on a vacation to the Virgin Islands than to Nebraska. image
