""unopened" Proof sets and slabing... worth it?

I have many supposed unopened proof sets 1958-1964 that I purchase on the ebay a few months ago. I am aware of the risks re re-sealed "unopened" sets, but now I'm antsy to open 'em up and see what's there. I've seen from other members that LANGE's book re proof sets is a good reference that I'll pick up today.

I'm a virgin proof opener and I was also wonder if its really worth it to slab anything in these sets. When I review bid prices on most of these MS coins it just doesn't seem worth it to spend the grading fees???? So if your not going to slab 'em then what proof roles, or albums?

Thanks in advance! Great board w/ lots of good info!

  • I have about 20 sets of "unopened" from that era that I bought on Ebay.
I decided I would send them in for grading and slabbing. I opened them
and, in my opinion, not one was worth sending in to the TGPs. I am no
expert but these just have a zero eye appeal. Your choice and I say:

    Go for it!

  • I say open them.

Here is what I found in some so far that were supposedly unopened...I will upgrade these as I find more.

  • I would open them, I just opened 4 sets the other day but nothing of any real great value found.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I just cant help myself and besides I don't collect brown envelopes so having them isn't really the same as appreciating the beauty of a coin. We'll see what happens and I'll post some results.
