I'm not sure "copy" is the right word but the bidders didn't read the size in the listing. This is the small size plaque (about 2.5x3) by MEDALLICART CO NY. You see these sell in the $30 to $40 range. The large size (about 8x10) that came on the marble slab were made much earlier and go for $1000 to $2000.
This one is even larger (about 11x14) and sold a while back by Heritage for $4000.
Thank you. I did search Heritage and saved images of the two sizes I saw there. This auction lists in MM which I never converted. The images I saw had copyright 1907 and vertical writing along edge. It just seemed implied this was original. I did ask the seller in a polite way and will be curious what they say. Joe
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly."
I owned one of those about 20 years ago. I think they were made in the 1960's, but I could be mistaken. So far as current value goes...I don't have the slightest idea.
Edit: My comments refer to the plaque in the original post.
The plaque is original but made by MEDALLICART CO NY. 1960 sounds about right. The bidders don't have a clue what they are looking at. The seller's listing is 100% correct from what I see. It's really not a copy as we would see it in the world of coins.
It's the same work of art on a different plaque. Brenner used his work in many different ways. I could post several images of this same work but they are not considered copies.
This is the really cool one to me. I call it to 8x10 size. This is the work Roosevelt saw when him and Brenner were working on the Panama Canal medal.
There was one similar to the second posting that recently sold in a Leland Little auction sale in Hillsborough , NC that I attended two sundays back. It was dated 1907 , Bronze and 5x7 or so. It went for over 2k if I recall
Idhair the two you imaged are similar to the images I saved. This text from the auction along with the likeness of the plaque to what I remembered mad me first think it was one of the two larger ones.
From auction. Wonderful plaque on President Abraham Lincoln that inspired the long-running and ubiquitous Lincoln Cent. Brenner fashioned this Lincoln profile after a photograph taken by Anthony Berger in 1864. Uniface. Very attractive piece. Scarce.
I understand what you are saying Joe. You are right. This plaque was not what inspired the Lincoln cent. It was the same image but on a different plaque.
I don't know if the seller even understands what he is selling.
To add to the confusion just a bit, this is the silver in 2x2.5
Well in responce to my question concerning this being a possible modern copy of the plaques imaged above I received this responce.
Hello Joe, thank you for your interest. This piece origins from a German collection from the years 1900-1930 and is definitely no modern copy. It remained untouched in a cabinet for the last 70 years. Best regards, Nicolas Maier
Twenty minuets I receives another message in German(?) which I can only hope was the same message repeated. Joe
