1967 Stand Ups shoulda been cards (added Whitey Ford & Ernie Banks)

I thought I'd share 3 examples of a side project I've been working on when I have time. I fell in love with the '67 Stand Ups, but I kept thinking I wish so-so, was in this set. I finally decided to put together a list of players I would have liked to also have been in the set and started creating them.

Here's the first 3 I've created: Koufax, Bench, and Perez. I know technically Bench didn't have a card in 1967, but I believe he did play in 1967 hence the 68 Rookie.

Thanks to Bob for his help, without seeing a bunch of the cards, I probably would not have had an opportunity to see them all (well all but Richie, sorry Bob). Keith (CON40) also gave me some tips about fonts. And Kevin (mcholke) provided me a nice high-res scan of the Perez.

I've got more players I want to do and when I complete them, I'll post them if anyone is interested in seeing them.
edited message title, added info about Whitey and Ernie Banks

Thanks, I really like how they turned out. I'd like to try and work on a Stargell, Banks, and McCovey in the future. I've also toyed with a Brooks Robinson and Scott (quitcrab) sent me a version he did, which I might tweak a bit.

They look mint too. You should get them graded.

This reminds me of a feature they used to do in Beckett where they'd make cards that could have happened, like a 1984 Donruss Roger Clemens.

kevin, Awesome job. Those look great. Did Rose have a stand up card in 64 ? If not one of those would be cool too.

There are guys on the Beckett boards that make some very impressive custom cards. Most are of current prospects, but they show off some impressive photoshop skills.

Any suggestions for other players that ought to be in the set?

I have most of the guys suggested here, in my list of to-dos. My biggest problem is coming up with images to use. Too small, then they get grainy if I enlarge them. And sometimes too good is just that, too clear, but that can be rectified more easily than the former problem. Sometimes it is just difficult to come up with a good portrait shot in general.

But with that said, here's my latest one, Willie Stargell.

great work! I think you could possibly print them on decent card stock and display them.
  • Options
Thanks! I've been researching ways to do this. I've printed them off just on photo paper at home and put 'em in a display and they look nice. Right now I'm trying to figure out how I make archival quality cards, as I've had some interest. Once I figure that out, I might start spamming. image I have a huge appreciation for Knuckles work, and I'm not even having to put any cutouts into them.

I should be able to blow these up to a pretty decent size and have them printed on archival quality paper (with a glossy surface such as from a photography studio). I've blown up a Rose to 12"x20" and it looks pretty cool.

Many commemorative, reprint, etc. sets have been issued (think Fritsch) that you might consider doing the same. I'd certainly be a customer. Beautiful work!

allen - well, I don't plan on that but you know, i wouldn't be surprised if someone did something like that. maybe i should start putting some watermarks on 'em.

ajw - Hmm, 64 Stand ups. You know, I'm still not happy they didn't stick Rose in the 64 stand ups or the 64 giants. Once I finish this project, who knows. Although, those weren't really my favorite with the yellow/green backgrounds. Had they been like a white/red or white/blue, I think that would've been cooler.

If anyone has any photos they wouldn't mind sharing with me, I'd add more guys like Carlton, Ford, Carew...etc. pm me if you have anything you'd like to share.

Thanks! Card #4 is slotted for Brooks and I had created a couple of versions but the images I have just aren't good enough. I keep meaning to buy a photo of Brooks off ebay, but I like to keep Scott (quitcrab) in suspense. image

Hi. Well, right now these are just digital creations. I have yet to figure out the best (most economical) way to print them as real cards. Although I've been in touch with Griffins and a couple of others.

Did you get with Garett aka Knuckles - he's done the best job on the planet of making cards.

This card has all the look and feel of a professionally printed card ba manufacturer.
