CONTEST: Pick $2K of cards

I know, terrible and difficult position none of us want to be in, eh?
I should get a nice little pop tomorrow (knocks on wood).
Say I allocate $2k of fun money for cards.
Other than my sets, I want to expand my player collections.
It's the usual suspects of the older HOFers for baseball, football, and a little basketball.
Pre 50's / Pre-War: good looking 3s and 4s with a sprinkle of 5s.
50's: Really good looking 5s and 6s with some 7's and lucky 8's snipes.
60's: Hard to find 6s and the rest being 7's and higher.
Don't know if I would want a couple high grades or several mid grades. Guess it depends on who it is...
Insight and suggestions will be sincerely appreciated.
Who knows, maybe I will send a little something-something to the poster with the best idea
Edited to add: Fooook it, contest it is
Details to come later..........
Okay, so.. I gots me an idea.
Rules:
One entry per person with edits allowed (but must be made within 15 minutes of your post). State at least 4 cards with a total value of $2,000 with a +/- $200 margin of error. There is no maximum for one card (ie $750, $250, $500, $500) but you please be realistic with your pricing. For example, you ain't getting a '55 Clemente PSA 5 for $400
Since it's going to take a little research and effort on your part, deadline will be Friday April 6th at 5:00 PM CST.
With my own judgement, I'll pick the top 3 suggestions. Then add a week long poll to this thread (if possible) and let you guys decide. Poll will close Friday April 13th (
) at 5:00 PM CST
Prize:
Winner will get a card at least $75 SMR from my personal collection in addition to other goodies.
Good luck
Edited again to add scans of prizes

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Actually if budgeted correctly, you could accomplish all three.

<< <i>You should have people PM their offers so you don't end up with duplicate ideas >>
Normally I would agree with you but I don't want the question of playing favorites
And if you aren't original, probably won't make the top three.
Edited to add: I fixed the terms. Should have read a card valued minimum $75 SMR
T206 cy young psa3 $500ebay
1955 topps don hutson psa7 $350 gets you a decent one
1963 pete rose rc psa 7 $736 ebay
Just a few $$ over the $2000 you get 3 1/2 hall of famers, a good eye appeal T206 HOF, one hard sp from your 55 football set, and a good looking mantle. can't go wrong. Total $2036 unless you can save a few on the hutson
<< <i>Hey Stown, Is it ok to edit my Post, I meant to say 53 Bowman Color Reese but mistakedly typed 50 bowman color reese >>
Go for it
Most HOFers have been fairly soft in the middle grades, so I'll say you can pick them up at 80% SMR for PSA 5s (I've picked some up recently as low as 50% SMR).
You can put together all the less-popular low number (1-180) HOFers for $864 - and that list is Red Ruffing, Rick Ferrell, Bobby Doerr, Earl Averill, Chuck Klein, Paul Waner, Lloyd Waner, Arky Vaughan, Waite Hoyt, Earle Combs, Bucky Harris, Joe Cronin, George Kelly, Bill McKechnie, Travis Jackson, Frankie Frisch, Harry Heilman, Chief Bender, Johnny Evers, Heinie Manush, and Max Carey.
Now that you have put almost 10% of the Hall out of the way, add in a few more popular HOFers from the set. I recommend PSA 4s (which you can readily get at about SMR) of Grover Cleveland Alexander, Jimmie Foxx, Honus Wagner, George Sisler, and Mickey Cochrane. That's another $375.
Now turn your sights to 1950 R423. For $300, you can buy NM or better copies of these 4 whole strips: Ted Williams/Stan Musial/Rogers Hornsby/10 others; Bob Feller/Joe DiMaggio/Ty Cobb (no auto)/10 others; Walter Johnson/Lou Gehrig/11 others; and Dizzy Dean/Connie Mack/Ty Cobb (auto)/Babe Ruth/Hank Greenberg (auto)/8 others. Carefully separate them at the perforations and grade the 13 I mentioned - there are plenty of other HOFers you can grade too. Figure $175 for the grading and shipping both ways - more if you want to grade other HOFers.
Now turn to T201 Mecca Double Folders to finish your purchases.
You can get most PSA 4s at about SMR. Gardner/Tris Speaker and Falkenberg/Nap Lajoie will set you back $350.
That's $2064, and you may be able to do it even cheaper.
You have 40 HOFers, including most of the key players of the first half of the 20th century.

Two things I should mention...
This will be for my personal collection, not to flip.
Additionally, you may want to keep your ideas simple. Too much thinking makes my brain hurt

$2,000 of great cards
Not all the highest grade, but many key cards that I would love to own in very presentable condition. Thanks for the opportunity in the contest. The 1950 Bowman Bednarik is one of my favorite cards...great photo, very cool in high grades.

1967 Tom Seaver PSA 6 SMR $335 - $299
1966 Fergie Jenkins PSA 8 SMR $135 - A PSA 9 recently went for $122.50

1962 Topps Gaylord Perry PSA 8 SMR $265 - No recent eBay traffic
1961 Juan Marichal PSA 8 SMR $185 - No recent eBay traffic
The above shows SMR and the lowest eBay sale in the past couple of weeks. The SMR for the group is $2215 but given current sales you should be able to pick up the group for under $2k with no problem. Or you could drop the Carlton and Perry down to PSA 7 and get the SMR under $2000.

1957 T Rocky Colavito RC $125
1958 T Roger Maris RC $500
1962 T Sam McDowell RC $80

then these 1954 Bowman non-RCs to make a card collage of the best rotation in baseball history:
Bob Feller #132 80
Early Wynn #164 $50
Mike Garcia #100 $20
Bob Lemon #196 $50
Art Houtteman #20 $20
grand total comes a bit over your 2K at $2080 and if I had to drop it down to an even 2K I guess I drop the McDowell since its easy math...
Here is what your new collection looks like:
What do you end up with? A great collection of HOFers and a couple "should be"s Rookie Cards, a card record of the best rotation to take the field from the year they did it and an all around cool collection of some amazing Tribe greats!
Shea
~~~ edit to add these stats to the Feller/Wynn/Lemon/Garcia/Houtteman (Art for 2 years as Fellers other half) rotation line…
In the 5 years between 1950-1954 that rotation went 389-212 (65%) with a 2.59 ERA! Now you know why I have to make sure I get the big 4s Rookies and include Art once he got in his Tribe uniform
