Adding new cards to player sets

Is it an accepted practice to add cards to the player sets if you do not own them (saw them on Ebay or auctions but did not win them)? I have never done so but was wondering if anyone else has or what the general opinion would be on this.

My guess is that 99% of cards added to player sets are from people that own them, as they try to add cards that someone else might not have in order to move up the registry list. For fun, check out the BASIC basketball player sets for NBA stars of the 80's/early 90's (Barkley, Ewing, Bird, Isiah, Magic, Dominique) and see how different the set compositions are. Specifically the Barkley. It's an absolute joke.

It's getting to the point where Basic player sets are becoming less fun to collect, because there is ZERO consistency in what cards make up those sets. PSA pretty much lets any one person affect a registry that involves dozens, or even hundreds of collectors.

The registry is the biggest thing PSA has going for them. If they don't manage the composition of basic player sets better, they are going to lose marketshare in a BIG way...imho.
  • I understand where you are coming from, I'm getting sick and tired of people adding cards that are not basic set cards to the basic sets. And once it is done, I do not think that PSA will change it (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'm sure that there are more than a few members of player basic sets that are worried about somebody adding some regional issue card to their basic set. It doesn't exactly make it a "basic" set then.

But the original intent of this thread was: Suppose that I was collecting a player with a playing career that spanned into the mid 80's and the basic set currently is missing a 1982 Donruss card. A 1982 Donruss card of said player then shows up on eBay.

Would adding the certification number to the add cards form be an acceptable practice if you did not win the card but wanted the card in the basic (and master) registry checklist?

I do not see why it would be a problem. Technically you are doing them a favor and they need that card in the set to be truly complete.

Ah, sorry to sidestep the issue...I always take every chance I get to rail against the Basic Player Set composition.

To answer the question - I can't see why not, especially if it's a card that really should be in there. Hopefully it's inclusion would motivate more sellers to list the card you are looking for.

there is nothing wrong with using that card to request that a card be added as long as you dont add that card yourself to your own set when you dont own it.

  • I just asked someone at PSA how long it took to add cards to the registry, she said typically 12 weeks. I would be curious about how you go about getting absolutely ridiculous cards removed from sets as well. I just had some UK Panini sticker added to a basic set I was 100% on. Now I spend off time cruising ebay looking for a 20 year old sticker from england..... great

A few weeks ago PSA added a Ryan/Hrbek panel to the Jim Rice master set. I e-mailed them and asked them to please take it off and Carole wrote me back the next day to let me know they had taken it off! I don't know if it was so fast because the card clearly shouldn't have been part of the set or not. I would guess that cards that are debatable would have to get someone's approval before it was taken off the registry and, therefore, take a little more time to remove.

They should have a population quota for BASIC sets. Or from a mass produced set.

e.g. If a card has only 2 graded cards, then it would not be added to the basic set until 10 (or 15 or whatever amount) cards have been graded. I would think this would help PSA because if someone wants a card in the basic set, then a set number of the card has to be graded before it qualifies for Basic set status.

  • There are some guidelines I have read somewhere. I think there has to be at least 2 cards graded for it to be added to the master set. I agree, there should be a minimum of 10, or 25 for it to make a basic set.
