PCGC and NGS Grading services

I am thinking about attending an auction in April. There are may coins graded by PCGC and NGS.
Does anyone know if these are reputable firms?

PCGS and NGC are reputable firms. I have never even heard of PCGC and NGS is a pretty bad company. Unless it was just a typo.

I would say no, because they are obviously copy-cat grading services trying to get unsuspecting numismatists to buy coins in their holders, which probably look a lot like the real grading companies' holders....

It must say precisely ,PCGS or NGC. Any deviation of any kind,

means that the grading company is a shyster copycat. They are trying to

make the public think, that they are one of the top two grading companies.

No disrespect intended but do a search in the upper right hand corner of this page. This topic has been discussed hundreds of times.

Both are very reputable companies, but PCGS graded coins have a premium compared to an NGC coin, all things being equal.

"Bruce, better re-read the initials of the grading services in question. Fortunately the slabs look nothing like those of the companies whose names they are trying to imitate.

These are both new startup companies and quite possibly run by the same people as the few times I have seen either in quantity the same dealer had them and both at the same time. I first ran into them in mid January this year and although I have a policy of not commenting on the grading done by a TPG I do have to comment on NGS. I have my NGS slab in hand, a 1909 Barber half graded VF-20. Well it does have full rims. image But I'm sure the eagle is pretty cold, he doesn't have any feathers. And apparently Wyoming will not be the first coin to have a silhouette on it. All of the NGS coins I saw were like that. The PCGC slabs were not as bad, but I'm not saying they were good either."

No, neither are reputable companies as he typed them. By assuming, or misreading what he typed, that he meant PCGS and NGC, telling him that the companies he typed are reputable is a disservice.

PCGC and NGS are NOT the top two reputable grading services, PCGS and NGC.

  • if Bruce thought PCGS and NGC - then the deception works pretty well !
  • Thank you everyone....

FYI...the services are PCGC and NGS which is why I asked the group for their input. It sounded "fishy" to me. But, I am such a novice I like to turn to more experienced people for advise.

Which auction is using these two obscure services? Is it possible the auction company just mistyped them?
