SMS Designated Coins...Still Learning

Ok, I know a lot of the Kennedy Half Afficiandos like the SMS variety (?). Through searching various sources I think that I've come to the conclusion that SMS stands for "Special Mint Set (?)." So, the special mint set Kennedy's (and other denominations) that were made for these sets are "preferable" to non-SMS coins of the same type. What is it that is different or preferable about the SMS coins?

If the above does not make sense...what is SMS and why is it desired?

Thank you for helping me continue my numismatic education!

It is different than a regular business strike, it is an almost "proof like" strike and has semi-shiny surafces.

SMS coins are "preferable to non-SMS coins of the same type? NO.

I for one collector would rather have a MS67 "Business Strike" coin to a MS67 "SMS" coin any day.image

EDIT TO ADD: I have a 1966 MS68 SMS Kennedy that I would be more then willing to trade you for a 1966 MS68 Business Strike Kennedy.image

For some info on the SMS coins, try the info at the bottom of the page in this LINK. The 1964 SMS coins are desireable due to their low pops. The 1965-1967 SMS coins, while different than business strikes, are not universally more desireable to collectors. While there are certainly those who prefer the SMS coins, there are also many who prefer the business strike coins...some of which are very difficult to find in higher grades.

Heck...I might even trade a 1966 MS68 SMS Kennedy for a "Downgrade" to a MS67 business strike image
