A 1968 proof Set that even Madmarty and Russ will drool over (no pics, nor are they needed)

segojasegoja Posts: 6,141 ✭✭✭✭
I bought the 1968 No "S" Discovery Proof Set today with all the documentation, along with a second regular set the owner received when he ordered 3 1968 proof sets from the mint.

The coin came with several handwritten letters to Numismatic News, 4 typed notes back from Cliff Mishler acknowleging the set, 3 articles in Numismatic News talking about the discovery set and the gentleman's name. To tie it all together, I have the original mailing box with this guy name still intact corresponding to the Numismatic news article. it also shows a total purchase of 3 sets on the outside of the box.

The cool thing is this guy states in 1971 (Which is the year these were discovered) that 2 of the 3 sets he ordered had no mint mark on the dime. One set was sold about 2 years ago at a local auction (I was the under bidder at 1.5 times bid with an absentee bid....I had tickets to the Stones that night). I thought I'd never get my hands on this set, but low and behold the guy sells the auction company the second set outright and throws in the regular set for free.

Yes I paid strong for the set, but its really really neat!!!

  • Do you feel that the supporting paraphenalia substantially increases the price of the set? Or is it just more of a "WOW" factor ????? And what are the mintage estimates ????

Marty will take some pics for me.

Lontimecollector....I think the supporting documents raise the value. It sustantiates the provenance of the set as the discovery set(s). I'm not sure how much, but it should be worth 10-155 over a "normal' set.

Estimates range from 12-20. I think closer to the high number given what the pop reports show.

Pics should be out over the weekend!

That sounds very cool. I think we should talk since I have a letter dated April 1968 from the Treasury Department/ Superintendent of the Coining Division that expresses his concern about the error apparently from a 1968 proof set. If you would like to talk, not publicly then email me at jpr8044545@aol.com

Did you drop out of the bidding and have someone in the back of the room bid for you?

The current set was bought outright.

The first set I lost was an total absentee bid left with the auctioneer.
