Have you consigned coins to auctions?

If so, were you satisfied with the catalog descriptions?

Do you think the descriptions impacted the prices realized?

Any good stories for us?

  • The jury is out! I just sent a consignment of forty coins to Teletrade on 3-16-07, got a email from them that they were received on 3-21-07,
and that they would be notifying me by mail and email in what auctions the coins will be listed.
This is a first for me.I usually sell on Ebay but have given up for now, not willing to sell coins for half of greysheet.

I just consigned some coins for the very first time. I tried Teletrade, and I am very pleased with the results. I got very good prices.

Also, I don't think that the coin descriptions are very important. I never read that stuff, and I bet most people buy the coin and not the words.

How long did it take from the time Teletrade got your coins to scheduling them for auction?, and how long after did you get paid?

    No, Yes

Basically I chose poorly when I went with the company that auctioned my half eagle collection. If I were to do it again I would go with Heritage.

I have one consigned to Saint Louis by Heritage. I specifically asked Mark Borckardt to catalog the coin, but I do not expect him to lie or embellish the coin beyond what it is.

Several years ago I consigned a few top census bust halves and they did a bang up job. Two coins per page. They even cross slabbed an 1803 Draped Bust 50c to a PCGS AU55 holder. It was their idea and they took the iniative and had it done.

I lke Heritage. If something goes wrong they try to fix it. One time I had a coin fall through the cracks partly because their internet bidding system malfunctioned in the last 10 minutes of the auction. They went out and bought the coin back from the high bidder, for some undisclosed price, and returned it to free of charge. I later sold it for twice the hammer price.

I don't know how many $100 gift certificates I have got from them but more than a few.

No. I don't work for Heritage or have any proprietary interest in them except I hope they keep being successful.
  • I've consigned coins to Heritage with generally satisfiying results. I don't think the discription altered the price realized very much though.

I have not. I'm afraid of getting a letter back that says : "sorry Joe, these are widgets" image
  • I've consigned a full PCGS Washington Quarter set to Heritage and was pleased with descriptions and prices realized. The whole turnaround time from sending the coins to getting my check was about three to four months. Some coins went in internet auctions while other, pricier coins went to a signature sale and took a longer turnaround time.

And my daughter gets a kick out of telling people that I paid for half of her wedding with "six cents." I auctioned 5 1954 66RDs and a 1947 67RD at one of Heritage's signature auctions. It was a lot of fun!
