$1,000 scenario: What would you buy???

Ok, you've got $1,000 to spend and you can choose among one of the following series:

Lincolns (pre-1935 wheaties)
Jeffersons (pre-1955)
Roosevelts (pre-1964)
Mercuries (any dates)
Washingtons (pre-1960)

You have to spread the $$$ over at least 3 coins (no cherrypicking a particular key and blowing the whole amount!), and you must hold on to whatever coins you buy for 5 years minimum. Which series would you invest this money in? If you want to be specific about which 3 coins and in what grades, you can do that too, using the current PCGS Retail Price Guide.

I'll start with something I know: Jeffersons. I think these 3 dates/varieties in the assigned grades will do very well 5 years from now.

1939-D Rev of 1938 MS67: $325
1939-S Rev of 1938 MS67: $420
1939-S Rev of 1940 MS65: $225

  • this is the criteria:

so NO saints, or walkers people lol.

I hate Jeffersons and Roosies; blah and double blah. So I would definitely score some nice lincolns or some choice Silver Quarters.

I can't give you the exact grade breakdown for how I'd structure my $1,000, but it would probably involve three or more of the following Jeffersons --

    39 ddr
    43/2P
    49D/S
    54S/D
    55D/S

I don't think those coins have very much downside, and they may do very well over time. Plus, I collect the series anyhow, so I have a reason to want them.

    (1) a well struck EDS 1927-S cent in choice UNC
    (2) a well struck (nearly FS) 1954-S nickel in choice UNC
    (3) a 1914-S cent in choice UNC

Not sure if valuations are aligned with these grades to make $1K total. If too high, adjust the grades down, starting at the bottom.

    1940-P Jefferson MS67 (PCGS only)
    1941-P Jefferson MS67 (PCGS only)
    1944-P Jefferson MS67 (PCGS only)
    1955-P Jefferson MS66 (PCGS only)

I still have $25 left, but I'll stop here. Now some comments:

-- Good luck even locating a 1940-P in PCGS-67 (pop 7/1)... and the $240 the Price Guide says is just a dream.
-- Also good luck even locating a 1941-P in PCGS-67 (pop 9/0)... and the $300 the Price Guide says is also a dream.
-- I haven't seen a 1944-P in PCGS-67 (pop 13/0) for sale in four years... and good luck even coming close to the $350 the Price Guide says.
-- The 1955-P in 66 (pop 15/0) may be the most underpriced Jeff in the Price Guide at $85. You might be able to get one for triple that amount, but quadruple is probably more like it. The last one on eBay went for $380.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Very good points DennisH, I agree with those picks. The 1939-S in MS67 is also a pipe dream at $420. There are only a handful of those and I'm sure they would run much more than that.

And for those that didn't like the series to choose from, then don't post! I was looking for people with some insights into those particular coins, nothing against Morgans, Walkers, SLQ's, etc. Those coins are great but this scenario was directed towards people that love to collect some other coins!

I'd buy a few MS63RB Lincolns (mintmarked from the teens) -- too many dates to mention that I need, er, want very much, but an 11-D would be on the list if available. Also a 27-S, those are my two major "problem" coins right now that I'd like to replace.

I like 'em raw. image Funny. It seems I like this strategy when it comes to spending $1000 of my own money! Of course I'd try fo better than AG grade. I s'pose I could buy BU bullion coins for that money but I like Morgans.

If it has to be three coins and only three within the categories listed, at PCGS guide prices, I would look for proof Mercs or proof Walkers, or proof Lincolns. Probably not the best investment, but they would be coins I might really like.

If it can be more than 3 coins, and it is at PCGS guide prices, it would be 166 low grade common date Walkers that currently list for $6 per coin.

/ edit, oops no Walkers, so whatever silver coins in the acceptable categories that are closest to melt value in the guide. For the three coins, maybe all three proof Mercs. Again, it depends on the quality of the coins actually available. A lot of top pop or near top pop coins selected are not readily available in the real world.
