666 could be referring to Nero Ceasar. A well known (at the time of the writing) figure, whose name "adds up" to 666. The Hebrew alphabet contained no vowels, and the emperor under whom the early churches two greatest ministers were executed was Nero. In Greek, Neron Kaisar. In unvoweled Hebrew, nrwn qsr. Giving these consonants their conventional numerical value, 50+200+6+50+100+60+200 = 666.
The biblical Beast could well be the Roman empire or more specifically the individual who personified all of it's cruelties of the time...Nero.
Historical Escatology is now dismissed.
Now of course, if those numbers suddenly appear on your forehead, that might be a different story.
