Impaired Proof...file under simple pleasures...

In change at the Grocery store tonight I received a 1971-S Washington Quarter -- it appeared pretty beat up from years of circulation, but from the low areas on the reverse, you could definitely tell that it started life as a proof. I wonder what led a person to spend a proof set in the first place?

I've got a 7070 started where every coin is an ugly, holed, or body bagged coin, and it's already about half full. This little non-choice proof will fit nicely as my clad Washington example.

neat! Every once ina while you come across proof coins in circulation, I've found about 3 proof nickels in the past year, as well as a proof half

I believe your title describes it perfectly and finding a coin such as that is always a nice surprise.image

A lot of time when I crack proof sets, the extras fall out on the floor. I don't put those into rolls, I spend them. People freak out when you hand them a proof coin for change!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Cool!! I have a similar story. I was at Disneyworld 2 weeks ago and got a 1981 S Proof in change. It too was beat up. It was my first proof found in circulation.

Once I have extracted the DCAM proof or the rare variety from 1971+ proof sets, I often spend the other coins rather than keep them. Never got one in change but I sure have spent quite a few.
