Correction: Winner rugbymarine!!! - Win My 2005 Heritage!!!

I'm a moron. rugbymarine gets the Heritage. See last page for details. Congratulations and thanks for playing!

In celebration of the beginning of baseball season and the collectors on this board I'm running a contest for the month of April.

Prize: My nearly complete 2005 Heritage Baseball collection. From what I can recall it's minus less than 50 cards if you include the light backs. You get everything, base cards, SPs, New Age Peformers, etc., including the light backs. You even get the dupes! No chrome or refractors.

Contest entry period: Enter between now and midnight Pacific Time, Saturday March 31. One entry per person.

Contest ends: Midnight Pacific Time, Monday April 30 or when the all games started on April 30 ends. For purposes of the questions answers include all games began on April 30.

Contest question: In the month of April what will be the total number of RBIs by both league leading players? Closest without going over wins.

30 - Arod 17, Miguel Cabrera 13

Contest first tie breaker: What player will lead the majors in RBIs for the month of April?

Arod 17

Contest second tie breaker: What team will lead the majors in home runs for the month of April?

Whats this? The Tampa Bay Devil Rays?

I'll try to post some scans of the Heritage before this weekend. Please, if you win do not sell these cards. Use them to complete a set, enjoy them with your kids or someone else's kids for that matter. This contest is meant to keep some great cards in the collecting family.

Good luck and play ball!!!!

SoFLPhillyFan, thank you very much for holding this contest and for the amazing prize. Recently I've been going after signed vintage-type (e.g. Heritage, Turkey Red) sets, making this the perfect prize for me.

I'm returning your email from a different one (Luc.Mitchell@gmail.com), because yahoo hasn't been working too well for the past couple months.

The total was actually 59. Not to be a stickler, (but I happened to be one of the people who guessed 59). A-Rod had 34. Francoeur and Adrian Gonzalez tied in the NL with 25. That's 34 + 25 = 59.

Am I missing something here ???

UPDATE after checking the original post:

3 people guessed 59 RBI's. xphunk, Cubby, and myself.

xphunk's guess: 59: Albert Pujols: New York Mets

Cubby's :59: Mike Piazza: Chicago Cubs

Mine: 59: Albert Pujols: New York Yankees

For the first tiebreaker, Piazza only had 8 RBI's while Pujols racked up 15 (not that many for him) so that takes Cubby out of the running.

For the 2nd tiebreaker, The Yankees hit 30 bombs and the Mets hit 22.

The question was - "In the month of April what will be the total number of RBIs by both league leading players? Closest without going over wins."

The intent of the question "both league leading players" was NL and AL combined. Yes the total is 59. I looked at the two MLB leaders, which is 60.

If you look at those who picked 59 and the tie breakers no one will win. No one picked the RBI leader or the team with the most HRs.

Now, tell me how we should handle this. I did not intend to have the tiebreakers come to a "who came closest decision." They are meant to be exact answers used to decisively determine the winner.

Let's talk. A review and input from any who did not enter would be appreciated.

I'll make sure that LWMN is receives a prize also.

I think the phrase "both league leading players" refers to the AL leader's total plus the NL leader's total. im not saying you are wrong, but if you wanted to say the top two total, "top two RBI totals" would have been clearer. I was under the impression that it was the AL leading total PLUS the NL leading total (Not that in any way influenced my original guess of 59, it was just a guess)

As for the tiebreakers, what if there was no confusion for the first contest question and there were 3 people who guessed correctly ?? Lets also say that none of them had any of the tiebreaker questions "exactly" right. The problem with the tiebreakers being "exact answers used to decisively determine the winner" is that those are not "exact answer" kind of questions.

The fact is they are tiebreakers. The first question is the first question. Work on that first. If the total is 60, LWMN is clearly the winner. If the total is indeed 59, then I believe the decision should then move to the tiebreaking questions, which must be handled in a "whoever comes closest" fashion.

    Sorry for the run-on sentences.

    Ian

p.s. I know that I have a great deal of bias here besause me winning those cards is at stake. That is why other people's opinions, relatively objective opinions, should probably rule over mine. Im simply stating my side.

I think that my post above made it clear that the intent was AL and NL combined, so you're jumping the gun on my thought pattern here.

The question was meant to be AL and NL. That is what I was thinking when I wrote it. That is how I believe those who entered guessed. My mistake.

    Here's my decision -

rugbymarine will get the Heritage by way of the second tiebreaker, Yankees HRs over Mets. PM me your address.

LWMM will also receive a prize for my mistake. I have e-mailed him. Sorry for the confusion Luc.

Before I post in my defence, I just want to make a couple things clear. If it is decided that I did not win this contest, I'll no hard feelings towards anybody. As SoFLPhillyFan said in his first post these cards are still staying in the collecting family, which is just as important as whoever wins. Also, again thank you SoFLPhillyFan for putting this together, regardless of who wins or 'loses'.

I think the clearest thing to go on here is intent, which, as Keith said, was to get a definitive answer. Indeed, were the tiebreakers to have been dealt with on a manner of who's closest, the choice of Pujols would end up with someone tied in 49th place for RBIs (with 60 other players at or above that level) and the choice of the Yankees would land you with a team with five others (a sixth of baseball) at or above the 30 HR plateau.

My view (which admittedly is probably somewhat biased) is that looking to 60 RBIs served as a third tie-breaker. It fits the intent of the contest (finite answer), is Keith's choice for it (it's his contest, after all) and fits well into the RBI theme of the questions (top two RBI leaders combined total).

Any other opinions would be welcome.
