Quick: Why delete the PSA registation number?

Why do some sellers on Ebay obscure or block out the PSA registration number? Is this so we can't look up the card on the PSA website? Why would this be done?

So people can't steal the scan and then try and sell the card based on the stolen scan.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Holy cow. That's crazy. Does that happen a lot? Now I'm worried.

  • It happens quite frequently on high dollar items
  • Ah. Well, after a brief glimpse at my bank statement, I have nothing to worry about.

there was someone on these boards a few years ago that added a bunch of cert numbers from active ebay auctions to their registry sets the night the awards closed.

    My Auctions
  • I have another story that shows people do steal scans of nice cards and use them in phony auctions.

A couple of years ago I bought a nice Montana rookie that was graded a 9. Then a month later, I'm searching on ebay and I see another one up for auction that looks very similar. I check the registration numbers and yup, it's the same one that I'm holding in my hand. I saw that the seller only accepted money orders or cashier's checks (surprise, surprise), so I was positive it was a scam.

I didn't want anyone to get cheated, so I notified ebay so they could end the auction. I never heard back from them and the auction ran it's course. When it ended, I notified the buyer so that he would know about it before making a payment. I never heard a word back from him either.

The end result is that I felt I did everything I could to try to avoid someone getting cheated. Since nobody bothered to get back to me, I can't tell you if it did any good.

^ Sounds like you went a couple of extra miles in an effort to be helpful.

What would you guys say is the more frequent threat, the fake auction or the dope who thinks they can get by with stealing your cards? I would think the former, because the latter is fairly easily remedied, at least if you have a scanner, but I could be wrong.

I used to chisel out my numbers when I posted scans in the Mail Call thread, but I rarely do these days, because I've usually always registered the card before I post the scan here.
