In what years did Topps make vending boxes?

I KNOW they go back into most of the 1970s and probably 1960s, and I know they go back up to at least 1997. Does anyone here know for sure?

They go back to at least the late 1950s as far as I know. Not sure exactly how far back into the 50s though.

And then perhaps 1997 was the last year for vending boxes? I'm surprised they even made it that far, as I'd think factory sets would negate the need for vending boxes.

I know a coin dealer friend of mine from Illinois had five or so vending boxes of 1956 Topps football a couple of years ago.

    Good day,
In Non Sports they have turned up back to 1957 and were very common from 58 through the late 60's, most High Dollar Non Sport sets have had Vending boxes turn up in the last few years, with the exception of 1962 Mars Attacks which I know existed because I bought them from the vending machines at age 6-7. I believe they were still in use into the early 70's at least.

I'm surprised there were even "local [card] dealers" back in 1959. I didn't think sports cards really caught on as a hobby until around the 1970s or so?

He didn't say he got them *IN* 1959....just that he got them and they happened to be 1959 Topps vending boxes.

  • Just sorted though an '84 Baseball untouched vending box. Pretty unhappy. It was more like a reject box. Nothing like MINT cards with tilted images to them and an assortment of cutting weirdness. Are vending boxes known to possibly contain weird stuff like this or did I just get the bad luck of the draw?

How do you tell if a vending box has been tampered with? If you see a totally straight 500 card "brick" with the "zebra stripes", does that mean it's most likely been untouched, because I can't imagine how you could possibly look through the box and then get it back totally straight with the stripes.
