alohaet update

Just wanted to let everyone know my new situation. Those of you who were real kind and thoughtful during my cancer back in Sept I would like to thank you. You all gave me a lot of encouragement and desire to get better fast. My Chemotherapy is finally over and I should start regaining my strength and start feeling stronger. I retired on Jan 20th and have since moved to Casselberry, Florida from Hawaii (boy do I miss Hawaii). I hope to start again collecting and completing the 1961-62 Fleer Basketball Set in PSA 8 grade.

Thanks again for all your support. Those of you over 50 get yourself checked out for Colon Cancer, the earlier it is found the better chance of a full recovery. Glad to be back in the fold again.

  • storm, I miss the perfect weather in Hawaii. Very seldom does it get into the 90's or dip below 60. I arrived in Florida and was 48 degrees in the morning and I thought I was freezing to death. LOL. Florida does have so much more to offer in the way of retail choices(lower prices) and places you can go. But I was in Hawaii for 24 years and also stationed there back in 1965 with the 25th Infantry Division. I really felt comfortable there. I liked the different ethnic groups and the vast variety of people. Florida also has that too.

Moved to Florida to be close to my son and his family. He got real concerned when I had my operation and stated he felt I should be closer to family should I have relapse. I am very fortunate to have a son & daughter who care so much. I stayed with my son until I got my own place. My car just arrived today from Hawaii and it's good have my own wheels again ($1,930 to ship from Hawaii to Orlando).

Here is a list of 61-61 Fleer Basketball Set cards I need. If anyone has any in PSA 8 grade feel free to email me.
    1,2,3,5,6,8,11,15,21,27,28,33,34,36,39,40,43,44,46,49,55,56,65 and 66.

Thanks guys for the warm reception and prayers.

Welcome back Ed. Try to make it over to Port Canaveral during launch day. There are a few fine eating establishments on the water. Great food, people, music, happy hours and especially the views.

Moving to Hawaii to Florida must be a big adjustment. Not many authentic Hawaiian restaurants, but plenty of Denny's and IHOP in your area. image

    Ed,

Great to have you back in the loop...

In case anyone has forgotten, Ed used to own the #1 All-Time Receiver Set on the Football Registry. It was a masterpiece before he had to break it up.

    Best of luck!

Ed ..............Glad to hear everything turned out ok ! Hope you have a speedy recovery ! Great advice about having a Colon test done ! Colon cancer is one of the most easier kinds of cancer to treat , if caught early ! Just retired myself , at age 55 from the Postal Service after 33 years of being a mailman ! Always dreaded having the Colon test done , but did it two weeks ago ! Nothing to it ! Sorry I can't help you out on the Fleer Basketball ! ........... Robbie

  • Robbie, I am a Federal Gov't retiree and must switch medical plans. My current HMO(Kaiser) is not located in Florida. I checked some medical plans and was surprised that I can join the Postal Union and sign up for the APWU health plan. Are you in that plan or a different one? Looking for a good plan to switch to here in Florida. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Ed,
Welcome to the mainland again. I'm glad to hear you're doing well.
Staying close to your family is very important for your well-being.
Stay positive and thanks for the advice about getting checkups.
It's important for all us guys to get the checkups when the time comes and not to ignore doing it.

Good luck on your '61 Fleer Basketball set. I'm working on that one too. Great set with lot's of rookies.

    Take care,

    Rich
  • WOW! Thanks for all the nice comments. I have been here in Florida for about 4 weeks now and have been pleasantly surprised. Everyone I have encountered so far has been very helpful and courteous. Maybe I will get to attend some card shows in the future. I now need to get all my address updated. First time I have moved in 24 years and I don't want to go through it again. I will be unpacking for weeks. LOL.

    Thanks again to all.

Good to hear that things are looking up. Hopefully it will be cheaper for you to live in FLA., thus more money for cards.

  • Hi Ed. Welcome back. Coincidentally, I was thinking of you the other day and had mentioned you in another thread. I'm glad you're feeling better. I was surprised about the move though. I know how much you love Hawaii. Although I'm about 10-15 years from retirement, my wife haunts me... I mean suggests, that we retire to Hawaii.
Maybe next year on or annual family pilgrimage to Disney, we can get together. Take care and keep in touch my friend.

Glad to hear you are doing well,

I am a cancer survivor myself. 3.5 years remission for me. When I got off of chemo I tried to do too much so take your time and starting slowly. I see that you are over 50 (I am 35) so your recovery may take just a bit longer.

I know what made me feel better was the ability to eat Ice Cream after my stomach calmed down. Go have a frozen cutard on me.

    Take care

    Troy
  • Troy, I have to agree the recovery will take longer than I expected. But fortunately for me I am retired and can take my time. You were way too young to have cancer and I am glad you are well and feeling better.image Stay healthy.

    Hello Ed,

I remember when you first announced this. I am happy about hearing the good news. You have great children for them to want you nearby. Enjoy that!

Your chemo must have gone without complications and the cancer was not as widespread. Unfortunately, my father has had numerous infections and that delayed and postponed alot of the chemo. He was on chemo before you were and now it is just being postponed till he recovers. He had pneumonia just recently and recovered from that--very close call. Anyway, I live with my father and mother and we are caring for him as much as we can directly. I postponed my own pursuit of a doctoral dissertation so I can be here with my parents and run their rental property business for them. I am a part-time lecturer at a university, but no way near a full time tenure track position because I lack a PhD. This is a situation where family takes precedence over my career aspirations in an immediate way. Cancer does a lot to disrupt not only the life of an individual, but also the family that is around him.

The best thing you can do now is continue to eat healthy (high fiber diet and lots of anti-oxident rich fruits and berries) and exercise, which can include brisk walks in the neighborhood. Do only as much as you can. With a healthy body, you will do much better should a relapse occur (I hope you won't have it, but keep your body strong). Keep collecting cards and enjoy other hobbies. Spend holidays with your children's families and have periodic get-to-togethers.

  • DeutscherGeist, I am so sorry to hear about your father. One thing I learned while taking Chemotherapy was, here are alot of people who were much worst than I am. There would be about a dozen of us in the room receiving our individual treatments and I could see that I should be thankful my cancer was not as servere as some of them. You are doing the right thing looking after your father and believe me he really appreciates it. From a fathers point of view he is saying to himself, "I must have done something right for my children to care so much for me." PHD or not he looks at you with with loving eyes and so thankful that your heart is so big and full of love for him. Degrees aside you have made your father very proud. I sure wish your father well and hope his condition vastly improves.

Thanks you for the good advice about staying active and a healthy living style, you are so right.

    Good luck, Ed

  • Welcome back Ed!

I lived in Altamonte Springs a few years ago. You're moving to an area of Florida that is exploding right now. Half those stores on the 436 weren't there a year ago. There is a Topps HTA store there on the 436 (at least it was) in Casselberry. They deal mostly in comics/MTG/pokemon etc, but last time I was there they had a pretty good selection of sports as well.

Good thing about Florida as mentioned by someone else--no state income tax.

Also, you are a stones throw from Lakeland, Kissimmee and Winter Haven (spring training for the Tigers, Astros and Indians)

And the Orlando Magic are somewhat accessible at their training facility right off the I-4.

Bad thing about Florida--Too many damn tourists.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

DeutscherGeist I feel for you!! My mother in the late 70s was diagnosed with cancer, she was given about 6 months to live. They tried chemo anyways, she went from about 160 lbs down to less than 100 lbs. She passed away about 8 months after learning she had it. I always told myself that they better give me good odds before I go through chemo after what I saw it did to her.
