<< <i>keets contribution-----considering that a Truely Rare coin of any kind is a coin with an existing population(known numbers) of less than 75 based the accepted measure of the Sheldon Scale which is probably the most commonly used, i'd challenge ziggy29 to list his truely rare classic business strike coins as soon as possible.

    Please........................ >>

    1802 half dime
    1822 half eagle
    1875 quarter eagle
    1854-S quarter eagle
    1878-S half dollar
    1853-O no arrows half dollar
    1873-CC no arrows dime
    1793 strawberry leaf cent
    1849-C open wreath gold dollar
    1876-CC twenty cent piece
    1815 half eagle

To be fair you have to take out die varieties, if you don't you can include the 1958 DDO lincoln, the 1969-S DDO, etc....

Why? A variety if made for general circulation, is a business strike regardless off a change in design, it should still count...

Come to think of it the .999 gold outerspace SAC1$ are proofs and not business strikes. So I must disquailify myself.image

What about those Sac dollars struck with the quarter obverse die and the Sac reverse die? I believe there is only about a dozen known.

the SHQ and Sac mule was proven to be a Mint employee fabricated fantasy piece with workers ending up in the whose-gow if i'm not mistaken.

---RE: my challenge regarding classic issues.
it's interesting to note that at the time of issue most weren't rare with numbers above 75 struck. only time has rendered them in lower numbers. given the passage of 200 i'd be willing to accept that quite a few currently Modern coins will be considered rare. it is an unavoidable inevitability.

the trick is to know which ones have the best likelihood of achieving that goal.

<<Any thoughts on the Washington 1964-D reverse hub C. Seems to be very few of these around and with the price tag of $800.00 for a ms65 example I would think these to be a little on the rare side. >>

Excellent example. That is an one die example in silver production of a standard clad issue. In addition MS 65 is a rarity in itself. These seem to slip into circulation with nobody cherrypicking until it was almost too late.

A 1974 D Kennedy half was struck on a clad dime planchet and it's rare that it came into my possession by another dealer who sold it to me for the healthy sum of two hundred and fifty dollars, paid by check. To make matters legitimate, Don M he had me sign a contract agreeing to split the profits with him upon the sale of the item.

It graded AU 58 at PCGS and it is available as soon as the USPS delivers it. How rare is that ?

Not because it's passed through my hands, is it rare, or that I present it as such, but because some mint employee got away with doing it to probably less than ten pieces and he becomes a "Numismatic Hero" for his antics and his ability to play at work. How are we to ever know what's truly RARE since we're just having fun with coins at work ?

Many of the Jefferson nickels 1960 to 1970 are quite rare fully struck on both the obverse and reverse sides and this does include the steps.
I was the first to photograph a few of them, here and on the internet. And before someone implies that my coins are not PCGS certified as full step coins, all I have to say to that is, good luck with finding coins that will. They are extremely rare to come by, if they exist at all. The examples I have acquired have taken almost 20 years.

    Not a business strike.
The Cheerios dollars were, and with fewer than 100 pieces known it is "rare."
