88 fleer wax bust - no duplicates - is this common?

A few years back I had busted a box of 1988 fleer baseball wax (I can't recall the reason). Anyway, after opening the packs, and pulling the stars for penny sleeves, I put the rest of the cards back in the box. As part of a massive restructuring/reorganizing of my collection, I decided to numerically sort all of my commons (yes, I've had some spare time lately - although recalling some of the players from 20 years ago was pretty fun)....anyway, I was astounded to see that I did not get a single duplicate in the entire box!! This has to be some sort of first, right? Or is Fleer just that good at randomizing (or bad, if you are looking for dupes of a high quality card). Normally, I can't buy more than 5 packs without getting duplicates, let alone a whole box.

Fleer boxes used to always be that way. It was very rare to get duplicates.

So it sounds to me like they did their pack collation the same way they famously did their "four vending boxes numbered 1-4 = three sets" back in 1981-85. So back in the 1980s, the cards seemed to be "mixed" but in reality were in the same sequence? I guess that's why Topps factory sets do not come in numerical order, yet once they are ordered numerically, you do find all 792 cards are there.

And don't feel bad about busting upon that 1988 Fleer box. It's better than say, the super-boring 1991 Fleer set. image

I busted a pair of 85 Fleer boxes from BBCE a few years back. I got lots of duplicates between the two boxes. Off the top of my head, I recall getting about 5 Tony Fernandez cards and and 4 Dwight Goodens. Unfortunatly, only 1 Puckett and Clemens between the two boxes (each one being OC).

I've also recently busted some 89 Fleer, and saw the expected ammount of duplication. I've never oppened a wax box of any year or company that didn't yield at least some duplication.

So, did you get any Gregg Jefferies cards? If not, it's possible that the box was searched a long time ago.

I know that Fleer cello boxes will rarely produce any dupes.

Yes, I did get a gregg jefferies card.....and immediately reached for my PSA sub report....NOT!

BTW - OT - for those that saw Borat, I thought the "NOT joke" was one of the funnier bits in that movie, it really brings to light how stupid that joke was at the time.

I bought several boxes of 89 Fleer practically right off the truck from 7-11s at 2am on several friday nights. This is when they got their deliveries. I remember the patern was sometimes broken but 89 Fleer was always in a patern. This may not be the case after they recalled the cards and resealed them. The original cards only had duplicates if the patern broke in the box. It would have been very easy to pull the Greg Jefferies or Bill Ripken card from these packs, especially when you can see the name right though the package.
