Nice early date Mexican 8 Reales...

Think it's from China? image

Whoa! 200 years before its discovery! Now that is an early piece.

Actually, if it weren't for that date, I would maybe have fallen for that one, since I am no specialist in those coins, having owned only one (an 1844-Zs holey on my vest).

I mean, the details look a bit hinky, but there were enough crude issues and contemporary counterfeits that those could account for its "off"-ness. In fact, I wouldn't put it past the early-19th century Mexicans to have had some illiterate person punching the dies in 1827.

But you're probably right- I hear twangy Asian music in the background. image

Which brings to mind the Chinese restaurant we Darksiders ate at in Charlotte. Boy, that was great. Sorry you weren't with us, Andy, but I enjoyed meetin' you briefly on the floor.

That's a scary coin - how's the edge on that thing? The eagle looks similar to Guadalajara 1825-1845 Die Style.

Could be a primitive contemporary imitation/counterfeit.

Those have been on these boards before.

What's interesting about this coin is that the error has been corrected, but coins made with corrected dies are also rare. There are only a few known with the original error and if someone specializing in Republic 8 Reales coinage (and deep pockets) will enter bidding on this lot - I see it going way over $10,000.

Thanks for posting this, Andy. I love researching something like this on a whim and learning about these fascinating issues.

Do you actually think it's authentic? It's too obvious a mistake to leave the mint, isn't it?

It's real and in the upcoming Ponterio auction. I've only seen one other, in the Parker collection.

    Lot 377

"1287"-FS. Error date. DP-Ga03. EX: Spink America "Pablo Gerber collection", 6/96 auction, lot #226 where it hammered for $8,500. EXTREMELY RARE, only 4 known examples. This die cutting error was probably discovered and corrected rather quickly, accounting for the great rarity of this variety. The following lot is an example from the corrected die. A few light scratches on the reverse field, lightly cleaned,
    EXTREMELY FINE.

    [6000.-9000.]

And here's a picture of a coin struck from the corrected dies.
