What to do with PQ cards?

I bought a couple of relatively expensive cards from board members, and they are super nice for the grade and would not look out of place in the next grade holder. (Yes, Neil, one is the PSA 7 1956 Clemente that I bought from you - thanks). I have never done the crackout thing, but I am sorely tempted.

It does not seem, in contrast to the coin market, that folks will pay substantially over SMR for a great card. Consistantly, I have seen where much weaker cards in a better holder sells for a better example in the lesser holder. We buy the holder, not the card. I have also considered a submission to SGC to go for the .5 upgrade, which I consider a shoe-in.

I would appreciate your input and experiences. Thanks.

I would have to disagree with those statements. From my experience, I've seen cards with better centering and worse corners sell for more than a card in a holder one grade higher, or even 2 grades higher with an OC qualifier. There are also many, many cards that will sell well over SMR. Certainly not all of them but there are always cards that are "high-end" for the grade and low-end for the grade. If you have a card that appears as nice as the same card in a higher holder, by all means, give it the ol' crack and resubmit. We love seeing those results so make sure you post them if you do it! image

I don't disagree at all with the statement that many people buy the holder not the card and there are some scrubs in hihg-end holders but I think that's a smaller percentage. I could be wrong of course, but that has been my experience.

There was a thread a little while back about a guy who buys undergraded cards, cracks them, and puts them on ebay raw for profit. If the scan is big enough and you describe the details accurately, a card like this would probably sell for more raw.
