Silly question on thickness of cards (modern)

I have read where collectors will start talking about 60 pts, 120 pts, or higher in terms of
thickness of cards. What do these numbers mean, and how are they gauged to determine them?
Ignorant question, but I'd appreciate it if someone can please tell me. Also, what does pts mean?
Thx

I always thought pts was a printing term to determine letter size.
