Wang, no ace to begin with, is expected to be sidelined for "at least a month" according to reports. Pettitte is coming back to the AL, where I already mentioned how AL bats have owned him over the last three seasons during interleague play (and, this is if Pettitte is even healthy enough to pitch). Mussina? He apparently is barely hitting 85mph with his fastball this spring, and he himself has told reporters he is "not happy" with his pitching. That leaves Carl "my butt hurts" Pavano as your Opening Day starter!!
You guys can't tell me you are not concerned.

It's the Yankees. They can buy whatever deficiencies they have before the trade deadline.
Can't wait till the old geezer Schilling and the WAY over-rated Beckett sink like stones leaving your 100 million dollar man as your savior
Oh, and Johnny Papelbon finally blows out his arm in the closer role. Oh boy I can't wait to start my PUT A FORK IN THE RED SOX THREAD

I don't see this happening. The only deficiency I can see them having is pitching, and the Yanks, like everyone else, would have to really overpay to acquire decent arms before the trade deadline. I think Cashman, who strikes me as a pretty intelligent guy, has learned his lesson from the Pavano/Johnson debacles, and is committed to bringing up young arms as opposed to buying pitching talent on the free agent market.

I think you are correct - unless another Bobby Abreu type deal presents itself to them (a pitcher this time) - I think the Yanks would jump on it especially if they find themselves trailing big time in the division come July or August.

Good point. If a Tim Hudson type became available then the picture may change. But I thought it was pretty revealing that the Yanks didn't land Jason Schmidt this past offseason, since he seems like exactly the type of player that the Brian Cashman of 2003 would have aggressively pursued and inked to some kind of a deal.

Cashman has been working on stocking alot of good arms in AAA and AA. Thankfully getting rid of malcontents Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield with the future in mind. Those who dislike the Yankees have dismissed this for the most part. The Yankees have arms in the minors which they have not had in a long time.

Being a Yanks fan, I do like the strength of the Yanks farm system. Humberto Sanchez, Ty Clippard (who I actually think may end up being better than Hughes over the years to come), and of course Philip Hughes.....and even Karstens.
Trying my best to be impartial, if both Yanks and Bosox have rotation problems, I would have to give the edge to the Yanks to pull through in better shape.
Both teams have a rotation that could be the best in the bigs this year....or the most heartbreaking.

I think it's too early to declare that these are the "new" Yankees. Remember, George is still in charge. I will agree, though, that they are definitely beginning to realize that even with money it sucks to rebuild each year with old, wheezing players to replace older, even more wheezing players. They plucked their farm system bare, trading away prospects for stars from teams who didn't want to pay them, and that practice reached critical mass 2-3 years ago when the playoffs made it obvious that the Yankees were just too old -- and didn't have the right *team* make up -- to win the championship.
They are showing signs of realizing that throwing top dollar at the biggest names and biggest stars only goes so far. It's enough to buy your way into the playoffs but not a very good way of winning them. Again, though, as long as The Boss is in charge, I don't know how much patience will be given to young prospects to let them prosper in the majors.
George has distanced himself ALOT in the past two years. He is no longer on top of all decisions and plans ....although Cashman still has to get his approval for most moves. Never-the-less, George has given up alot of the reign in New York.
oh, and I didn't declare anything .... all I stated was the fact that the Yankees have more strong and talented arms in the minors then they have had in a long long time

The Yanks will be in good shape if he keeps it that way. If you hire the best baseball people who know more about baseball than you, the best thing you can do is move to the sidelines and let them make the moves. Unless you think you know more than them, in which case, why pay top dollar for the best GMs and field managers?
I'm just not convinced George can keep his mitts off the team and out of player personnel decisions for long.

You may be right but I think his health and his family have made this decision for him. That is how I take it after listening to and reading everything I can find on a weekly basis.
